POSITION SUMMARY | The Department of Biostatistics is seeking a dynamic and self-directed individual to grow their Master of Data Science in Health (MDSH) program during a pivotal phase. This is a highly independent position, overseeing day-to-day operations with attention to program growth, quality and efficiency. The incumbent plans, organizes, manages and evaluates all aspects of the MDSH program and other partnerships. The incumbent will develop and maintain strategy and sustainable workflows related to the admissions, marketing and communications, budgeting and finance, academics and programming, program monitoring and evaluation, and related student services. The incumbent will supervise two full time staff and several part-time student positions and work with the department, university administration and academic senate to carry out and apply policies and procedures. This position reports to the Program Director. Launched in fall 2023, the MDSH Program provides advanced training in data management, data analytics, statistical modeling, machine learning, and big data computing for public health professionals. The program is designed for working professionals, with classes held remotely during the week, and in-person one weekend a month at the UCLA campus. The ideal candidate will be familiar with UCLA systems and programming, thrive in a fast-paced environment, and be capable of developing operations and strategies to grow the MDSH program. | | | |
Department Summary | The UCLA Fielding School of Public Health’s Department of Biostatistics is home to a stellar team of national and international leaders in a wide range of cutting-edge fields, including Bayesian methods, big data, causal inference, statistical computing, data science, functional data analysis, statistical genetics, hierarchical models, HIV/AIDS, image analysis, longitudinal data analysis, multivariate data, phylogeny, spatial statistics, survival analysis, and optimal design. This powerhouse of expertise is dedicated to preparing critically thinking graduates with strong, highly marketable skills through our four biostatistics degree programs: Master of Data Science in Health (MDSH), the Biostatistics; MPH in Biostatistics; MS in Biostatistics and PhD in Biostatistics. |

Determine future program opportunities. • Manage policy and program planning, development, administration, management and implementation. • Develop work plan that identifies objectives and strategies to achieve program mission. • Develop and manage sustainable workflows related to the admissions, marketing and communications, budgeting and finance, academics and programming, program monitoring and evaluation, and related student services. • Establishes operating procedures to facilitate productive goal achievement. • In collaboration with the Executive Committee, works on strategic planning for enhancement and expansion for the program. • Collaborate with Director and Executive Committee to create External Advisory Board consisting of industry experts, and manage associated activities • Manage the creation of short- and long-term program objectives and goals. Operationalize into milestones and strategy. • Collaborate with the four self-supporting degree programs within FSPH, leveraging expertise and resources to maximize recruitment, retention, and program efficiency. • Direct and oversee monitoring and evaluation related to student, staff, faculty, and alumni progress, satisfaction, success and program policies. This includes identifying appropriate collection techniques, creating survey tools, crafting multi-year plans and working with advisors to collect high-quality and meaningful data. • Present program-related data to stakeholders and create feedback loop to communicate findings and how programmatic changes will be undertaken. • Ensure program is on track and prepared for academic reviews. • Ensure compliance with university, school and departmental policy and procedures. • Manage components of all self-studies and accreditation processes for the program. | 50% | Marketing and Recruitment | • Identifies and develops communication and marketing strategies with the aim of expanding MDSH Program brand recognition, and elevating the successes of faculty, students and alumni. • Work closely with program stakeholders to analyze the program’s monthly marketing data and statistics. • Manage the preparation of print media to market the program including the production and design of newsletters, brochures, flyers, advertisements, articles in journals, program website, etc. • Develop ongoing outreach with external partners, biostatistics faculty and staff and FSPH dean’s office to ensure all stakeholders have updated program information. • Represent program at local and national public health conferences and professional meetings. • Work with program stakeholders to amplify marketing efforts to increase social media presence. • Supervise the social media activity for the program on LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, etc.. • Direct staff working on admissions review process with departmental faculty admissions committee and oversee complete admissions process with department, school and university. • Oversees information sessions and interviews with potential degree program applicants. | 20% | Human Resources | • Develop an effective organizational structure supporting various functions, including the program’s short- and long-term needs. Analyze organizational and programmatic needs and fiscal changes to recommend and implement changes in staffing requirements. • Supervise Student Affairs Officer and program staff, including creating staffing plans, crafting job descriptions, reviewing timesheets, assessing performance, training and managing hiring and termination processes. • In conjunction with the Student Affairs Officer, review all appointments to student academic apprentice positions, ensuring guidelines and bargaining agreements are followed. | 15% | Finance and Budget | • Develop a multi-year budget plan, considering current and projected financial resources and constraints. • Manage the budget including planning, analyzing, projecting and monitoring of the finance. • Oversee the purchase of goods and services. • Manage, review, and process expenditures of funds for the MDSH Program. • Prepare financial reports for the Program Director, Department Chair, Department Manager, and Executive Committee to track expenditures and plan for future needs. • Manage fiscal closing and other necessary transactions and ensure that necessary actions are taken to correct errors. • Create effective and efficient purchasing and payment workflows to ensure programmatic needs are met. • Provide annual summaries of the program accounts, with detailed accounting for all expend | 15% | | | 0% | | | | | |
