GENERAL DIRECTION - Indicates that the incumbent receives guidance in terms of broad goals and overall objectives and is responsible for establishing the methods to attain them. Generally the incumbent is in charge of an area of work, and typically formulates policy for this area but does not necessarily have final authority for approving policy.


POSITION SUMMARY

With the direction of the McNair Director in the Academic Advancement Program (AAP), the Assistant Director for the McNair Scholars Program has major responsibilities that include: the planning and coordination of the UCLA McNair Scholars Program; the hiring, training, and supervision of graduate mentors and student support staff; identification, recruitment and work with Faculty mentors on the academic progress of McNair students; work with Director and faculty to select and monitor academic and programmatic progress of McNair students; liaison with appropriate campus programs and departments; evaluation of McNair Scholar Program services; development of presentations and publications for McNair Scholar Programs.  

The Assistant Director will prioritize and complete on-going tasks following established AAP and College guidelines and written program expectations. Additional assignments may be made by the McNair Director on a project basis. Work and goal attainment are reviewed regularly by the McNair Director.

A1. In consultation with the Director, coordinate the UCLA McNair Scholars Program. (Essential)

 

A2. Participate fully as part of the Director's planning team, working cooperatively with other members of the AAP administrative leadership to establish program goals, directions and policies. (Essential)

 

A3. Identify, recruit and maintain relationships with the Faculty Advisory Committee. (Essential)

 

A4. Identify, recruit and maintain relationships with faculty mentors. (Essential)

 

A5. Participate in budgetary, staffing and program planning and decision making to prioritize and meet program goals. (Essential)

 

A6. Following guidelines established by the Director, implement strategies consistent with AAP and TRIO goals and objectives and established federal guidelines to resolve identified structural and procedural problems. (Essential)

 

A7. Develop methodologies and instruments for the evaluation of programs, workshops, and administrative operations. (Essential)

 

A8. Work in collaboration with AAP Graduate Mentoring and representatives from the Undergraduate Research Centers and other pertinent on-campus undergraduate research programs. (Essential)

 

A9. Assist the Director in special projects relating to student service delivery, student academic performance, and program effectiveness (e.g., assisting in the preparation of reports, evaluations, etc.). (Essential)

 

A10. When appropriate, represent the UCLA McNair Scholars Program as assigned by the AVP for Student Diversity and Director at regional and national conferences to give presentations, participate on panels, exchange information and publicize the achievements of the UCLA McNair Scholars Program. A11. Advise the AVP for Student Diversity and Director on matters relating to McNair Scholars' academic performance and progress toward graduate school. (Marginal)

Management and Service Delivery Coordination

B1. Following guidelines established by the Director and under the supervision of the Director, develop, support, and implement events, programs, policies and procedures for UCLA McNair Scholars Program. (Essential)

 

B2. Meet regularly with McNair Scholar participants to monitor their academic and programmatic progress. (Essential)

 

B3. Coordinate quarterly service delivery strategies and assure their implementation. (Marginal)

 

B4. Coordinate structured interaction and working relationships between the McNair, Graduate Mentoring, other AAP units and programs, as well as with other campus units, departments and programs. (Essential)

 

B5. Design and implement joint service activities and planning efforts involving McNair, Graduate Mentoring, and the AAP staff. (Marginal)

 

B6. Work with the AAP Director toward resolving staffing, student, and emergency situations in a collaborative, cooperative, and expeditious manner. (Marginal)

 

B7. Meet regularly with the McNair graduate mentors and student staff to plan and carry out service delivery strategies, monitor quality of services to students, discuss individual student successes and difficulties, and inform the College about McNair developments. (Essential)

 

B8. Analyze organizational, university, and broader societal changes, growth, trends, and problems relevant to pertinent educational issues for continued McNair Scholars program development. (Essential)

 

B9. When appropriate, research similar academic programs throughout the nation for the purpose of developing and improving the UCLA McNair Scholars Program. (Marginal)

 

B10. Work in conjunction with Director, AAP Research, Assessment and Evaluation, and Undergraduate Education Information Technology (UIT) on data collection for eligible students; develop and maintain mechanisms for monitoring and record keeping. (Essential)

 

B11. Follow-up on individual student cases and referrals to other campus resources as necessary. (Essential)

 

B12. Identify students with potential for graduate school. (Essential)

 

B13. Conduct workshops for McNair students as necessary. (Marginal)

 

B14. Compose detailed letters of recommendation for students applying to graduate school, professional school, employment, and/or scholarships. (Marginal)

Program Administrative Support

C1. Develop printed materials, such as, informational brochures and flyers to publicize the UCLA McNair Scholars Program. (Essential)

 

C2. Assist the Director with annual reports and other reports to the Academic Advancement Program and the UCLA College, as necessary. (Essential)

 

C3. In collaboration with the AVP for Student Diversity and Director participate in the development and implementation of a systematized procedure for all Mentoring Program staff hiring. (Marginal)
