POSITION SUMMARY

In Conjunction with Faculty directors and under the supervision of the Faculty Advisory Board, the Executive Director will oversee, develop and manage critical areas of UCLA Prison Education Program (PEP) and the Center for Justice (CFJ) operations including, Program Management, Strategic Planning and Policy Research, Communication and Development, and Expansion and Supervision of Staff,  including, but not limited to, Program and Internship Coordinators, and Teams of Graduate Student Researchers and Teaching Assistants. The Executive Director serves as the lead executive developing, operationalizing and supporting sharing the vision of the CFJ's Faculty Directors, reports quarterly to the Faculty Advisory Board (FAB), and directs and manages all PEP and CFJ operations. The Executive Director functions as the primary liaison to UCLA campus departments including the CFJ FAB, PEP Staff, Interns, Alumni, Community Partner Organizations, academic departments, and the leadership and education staff at County, State and Federal Correctional Facilities where PEP/CFJ offers courses and programs. The Executive Director utilizes the highest degree of knowledge and extensive lived experience to interface, cultivate and maintain vital relationships with external partners, particular with corrections staff, government agencies, non-profit and community organizations, and college and university partners in the field. This role has been created because of the expansion of PEP over the past decade since its founding in 2015, and the CFJ over the past three years since its launch in 2022, and demands to increase our capacity and leadership team. In addition to these core responsibilities, the Executive Director's work is expected to cultivate, deepen and expand our existing relationships between UCLA, half a dozen correctional facilities, and over a dozen community partner organizations to make UCLA degrees available to incarcerated students. The Executive Director is also be responsible for hiring and managing Policy, Practice and Advocacy personnel, and ensuring a comprehensive, cohesive and responsive strategy targeted for a wide range of audiences. The position is located in Los Angeles, CA. The position requires a minimum of three days each week in person in the office or at a correctional facility site.

ʉۢ Build, execute and operationalize a strategic vision rooted in data driven best practices of prison education, abolitionist pedagogy, educational equity, and systemic transformation.

ʉۢ Build and cultivate partnerships with incarcerated scholars, community leaders, and faculty.

ʉۢ Lead and facilitate the research, development, and securing of support for proposals and recommendations to guide and support a broader strategic direction for the Center.

 â€¢ Analyze data driven issues in justice reform and higher education to strategize center’s mission objectives.

ʉۢ Design and operationalize both short and long-range strategic planning and oversee systems to improve processes.

Development and Outreach

ʉۢ Develop and oversee the ongoing maintenance and development of multiple complex budgets with multiple funding sources for grants and endowments.

ʉۢ Manage meetings, leadership speaking events and interviews with key educators, advocates, researchers, press and representatives from government agencies.

ʉۢ Strategize, develop, implement, and manage the Center's social media, social media analytics, and communications strategy.

ʉۢ Collaborate on a regular basis with partners, outside agencies and other University departments who are leaders in the field.

General Operation and supervision

ʉۢ Develop and operationalize the staffing plan for PEP/CFJ. This will include recruiting, hiring, and supervising administrative staff and research assistants, interns and volunteers.

ʉۢ Collaborate with Faculty Advisory Board and Director to evaluate and evolve programs, disseminate updates of the website, biographies and reports to supporters annually.

ʉۢ Lead a growing interdisciplinary team, cultivating a culture of trust, wellness, accountability, healing, and shared leadership.
