POSITION SUMMARY

Under the general supervision of the Head of Football Performance Nutrition, the Performance Dietitian will assist in the planning, development, implementation, evaluation and management of the performance nutrition services provided to UCLA intercollegiate student-athletes. 

 

Primary responsibilities include: Providing individual medical nutrition therapy, team and departmental educational presentations to enhance the performance of competitive collegiate student -athletes to athletes belonging to Intercollegiate Athletic teams. Coordinate nutritional care as a member of multidisciplinary sports medicine/sports science team; Athletic Trainers, Physicians, Athletic Performance Coaches, Coaches, Team Psychologists and other Athletic Department personnel. Address nutrition-related logistical challenges to performance, such as hydration, grocery store shopping, as well as nutrition while traveling. Maintain and keep record of inventory,  assist with management of student workers and interns, input on travel snacks, hydration, and meal suggestions. Participate in high performance/athlete care meetings and collaborate with Sports Medicine Staff regarding individual athlete care and health related department programs. Must possess ability to adhere to and comply with Department, University, NCAA and BIG 10 rules and regulations

 • Provide individual medical nutrition therapy to student-athletes belonging to UCLA DIA teams as referred by Athletic Trainers, Physicians, Athletic Performance Coaches, Coaches, Team Psychologists & other Athletic Department personnel.

 • Coordinate nutritional care as a member of multidisciplinary sports medicine/sports performance team.

 • Address nutritional challenges to performance, hydration, recovery, grocery store shopping, & nutrition while traveling.

 • Provide or coordinate periodical educational cooking classes for student-athletes.

 • Address nutritional challenges to performance, such as diabetes, disordered eating, food allergies, bone mineral disturbances, gastrointestinal disturbances, iron depletion, & iron-deficiency anemia.

 • Develop nutrition care plans for student-athletes.

 • Provide medical nutrition therapy, as needed, to help manage or treat medical conditions.

 • Counsel athletes on optimal nutrition for recovery from illness or injury. 

 • Participate in student-athlete care meetings.

 • Assist with management of the day-to-day football nutrition operations. This includes product inventory, ordering, receiving, and distribution of goods.

 • Assist with management of nutrition interns, student workers, and volunteers on the day-to-day tasks for the football nutrition program.

 • Collaborate with Sports Medicine Staff regarding individual athlete care and health related department programs.

 • Collaborate with the student-athlete’s family, physician, coach and other health professionals.

 • Refer student-athletes to other healthcare related services.

 • Provide body composition and hydration assessments for athletic teams and individual athletes as appropriate in accordance with department policy.

 • Coordinate with team staff on home and travel competition meals and snacks.

 • Document all clinical encounters in student-athletes’ medical record using UCLA Electronic Medical Record (EMR).

 • Act as a primary nutrition resource for Sports Medicine and Medical Staff as well as other Athletic Department personnel.

 • Travel with the team to away games.

 • Maintain a consistent presence at football events throughout the week by participating and/or attending team meals, conducting weigh-ins, afternoon/nighttime snacks, and any nutritional and hydration needs for practice (pre-fuel, refuel, personalized hydration plans, etc).

Other Duties

 • Assist with the coordination of the department’s nutrition education messaging and event planning.

 • Assists with teaching sports nutrition topics and mentoring Performance Nutrition Student Workers

 • Assist with coordinating and organizing food service operations

 • Critically reviews literature on sports nutrition especially as it pertains to college health and assess its applicability to student-athlete health care.

 • Maintains a working alliance with CAPS (UCLA Counseling and Psychological Services) and assists with Disordered Eating Prevention programming.

 • Assist in providing and/or coordinating game day fueling and recovery nutrition.

 • Perform other duties as assigned by the Head of Football Performance Nutrition.

 • Maintain dietetic registration and continuing education requirements.

 • Stay abreast of current food, nutrition, and health issues and research related to sports nutrition.

 • Act as a representative Registered Dietitian in research projects with physicians on funded studies and present to appropriate Intercollegiate Athletic Departments.

 • Comply with all Federal, State, University and Department requirements established pursuant to Title IX, including the mandatory reporting requirements for a “Responsible Employee.”

 • The DIA is governed by the NCAA, Big Ten Conference, Mountain Pacific Sports Federation and University of California System.  The incumbent is required to comply with the applicable rules, regulations and policies of those organizations.

    ◦ Review and retain all rules compliance disseminated by the DIA Compliance office.

    ◦ Report all NCAA and conference violations.

    ◦ Sign the annual NCAA Certification of Compliance form.

    ◦ Complete the Athletically-Related Income form annually.
