GENERAL DIRECTION - Indicates that the incumbent receives guidance in terms of broad goals and overall objectives and is responsible for establishing the methods to attain them. Generally the incumbent is in charge of an area of work, and typically formulates policy for this area but does not necessarily have final authority for approving policy.


POSITION SUMMARY

UCLA School of Law is home to the most dynamic criminal law and policy program in the country. Our criminal law faculty (recently ranked #7 by US News), is renowned for its rich, creative, and impactful scholarship, and the level of student engagement in this area is very high. The Criminal Law and Policy Consortium (CLPC/"the Consortium") is a hub for the many criminal law and policy-related programs, initiatives, research projects, and collaborations, involving both faculty and students, that operate at the UCLA School of Law. The Consortium supports all these endeavors, disseminates the ideas and accomplishments of each, and develops a range of programming reflecting the wide range of perspectives and issues that come under its umbrella. It is also the administrative home for the Criminal Law and Policy Specialization ("the Specialization") and supports and assists the students who enroll in this specialization, along with other students interested in the field.

 

The Consortium is seeking a Manager, who will have responsibility for managing the various CLPC components. Major responsibilities include (1) developing materials to disseminate the research of CLPC affiliated faculty; (2) administering the Criminal Law and Policy Specialization, including counseling students on academic specialization requirements; (3) organizing a slate of events (such as panels, speakers, and book talks) each semester, with an eye to exposing all UCLA law students to a wide range of perspectives and issues; and (4) providing advice and some administrative support for the various programs, initiatives, projects and collaborations that come under the Consortium umbrella.

 

The Consortium Manager builds relationships across the law school and is enthusiastic about supporting students, growing UCLA's criminal law and policy offerings (both curricular and extracurricular), and promoting faculty research. An ideal candidate has knowledge of the U.S. criminal legal system and brings a commitment to the goals of the Consortium, is highly professional, has excellent communication and problem-solving skills, can work effectively with faculty, staff, and students, and is able to work autonomously while also remaining in communication with faculty directors. This position has a dual reporting relationship to the Co-Faculy Directors with a dotted line to the Associate Dean.

1. Oversee and manage the Consortium's administration, academic specialization, and programmatic efforts. (E)

4. Actively participate in professionally sponsored meetings, seminars, and symposia as a Consortium and University representative. (E)

5. Promote and manage the Criminal Law and Policy Specialization. Hold information sessions for interested students, meet one-on-one with enrolled students to ensure compliance with specialization requirements, and ensure online materials relating to the specialization are up to date. (E)

6. Publicize and administer the Research for Change program. (E)

Outreach

1. Develop promotional materials that increase the national visibility of the UCLA Criminal Law faculty, showcasing faculty research, policy initiatives, litigation and other accomplishments and highlighting the extent of the faculty’s engagement with real-world challenges and issues. (E)

2. Develop and oversee outreach initiatives to publicize activities, including through public newsletters and email communications. (E)

3. Pursue interdisciplinary collaborations with other programs, centers, and institutes at the School of Law and with other schools and departments at UCLA. (E)

4. Advance the criminal law faculty’s public profile through engagement in public events. (E)

5. Pursue collaborations with members of the criminal law community beyond the law school to help realize the goal of making the School of Law a center of dialogue in this field. (E)

6. Connect with UCLA alums working in the field to encourage their engagement with the mission of the Consortium, including by establishing mentor-mentee relationships with current students and bringing alums to the law school to discuss their work. (E)

7. Plan and execute several events (panels, speakers, book talks, pro bono volunteer opportunities, etc.) each semester, with the goal of introducing all UCLA law students to a range of perspectives on relevant issues in the field and providing opportunities for students to become engaged in the work of the many umbrella initiatives under the CLPC umbrella. (E)

8. Plan and execute the Criminal Law and Policy Faculty Workshop. Solicit participation from related faculty across campus to build strategic relationships across programming. (E)

Program Development

1. Identify, develop, and promote criminal law-related pro-bono opportunities for Law Students. (E)

2. Identify, develop, and establish new initiatives and programming related to Criminal Law and Policy. (E)

3. Manage existing student-facing programs and initiatives. Evaluate the effectiveness of programming and recommend modifications to boost participation or engagement. (E)

4. Propose and develop proposals for program or curriculum development for the Criminal Law and Policy Specialization. (E)

5. Conduct independent research on other Criminal Law and Policy programming and offerings. Highlight areas of interest for the faculty co-directors. (E)

6. Stay abreast of new and emerging laws and policies in the Criminal Law and Policy space. (E)

Specialization Management

1. Develop and implement operations/systems for administering and tracking the Criminal Law and Policy Specialization. (E)

2. Work collaboratively with the Law School's Records Office to ensure the specialization is reflected on the transcripts of specialization students. (E)

3. Provide individualized academic counseling to students in the Specialization. Ensure that the students are familiar with Specialization requirements, are enrolled appropriately in the courses that qualify for credit in the Specialization, and are on track to complete all necessary coursework before graduation. (E)

4. Advise current and prospective students on the academic offerings and benefits of the CLPS. (E)

5. Oversee the development and dissemination of CLPS informational materials for current and prospective students. (E)

Communications

1. Develop and create communications that highlight the Consortium, the Criminal Law and Policy Specialization, and other program initiatives. Manage the distribution and timing of communications. (E)

2. Oversee content for Consortium website and our presence on other media platforms. (E)

3. Advance communication efforts highlighting research and initiatives to various audiences. Collaborate with faculty and students to identify areas of interest and identify engaging formats for the delivery of materials. (E)

4. Serve as principal contact for inquiries from media and others outside of the Law School about the Consortium and its activities and stakeholders. (E)

5. Identify ways to amplify faculty research via blog posts or other more accessible formats. (E)

6. Oversee dissemination of information about  Consortium activities to the Law School community, including students, faculty, staff, and alumni. (E)

Grant Funding & Budget Management

2. Lead the development of persuasive proposals to seek more resources for the project, management plans, and project budgets to ensure timely and cost-effective completion of work. (E)

3. Serve as the point person to funders to exchange information regarding project status and to build and maintain rapport to enhance opportunities for additional funding. (E)

4. Determine short and long-range needs for the Consortium. Collaborate with the Co-Faculty Directors and Business and Finance Office to appropriately allocate resources. Recommend and reallocate resources as needed. (E)

5. Develop and oversee the Consortium's operation budget. Collaborate with the Business and Finance Office to regularly review expenditures and ensure projects and staffing are within budget. (E)
