POSITION SUMMARY | As part of a dynamic, transdisciplinary UCLA Center for the Developing Adolescent (CDA), the State-Level Policy and Practice Associate will implement and oversee a comprehensive, strategic, and transdisciplinary policy network of key stakeholders and collaborators with an investment in adolescent development at the state level with a particular focus in California, Pennsylvania, and other key states as requested by funding agencies. This will include developing strategies to disseminate key components to a wide range of scientific programs for youth-focused researchers, policymakers, practitioners, advocates for youth, and associated programs. In conjunction with CDA's Policy and Practice team, the Associate will assemble and guide the inaugural convening of the Advisory Board on Policy & Practice to advise UCLA CDA on their efforts to improve adolescent health, education, and well-being through developmental science. The position is located in Los Angeles, CA, and could be considered for a hybrid schedule. | | | |
Department Summary | The UCLA Department of Psychology is an exceptional department known for its excellence in research, teaching, and service. With a distinguished faculty comprising more than 60 ladder rank members, it is one of the nation's top psychology departments. Its undergraduate program is the largest within the Division of Life Sciences and the UCLA College, with more than 4,700 undergraduate students enrolled across three majors: Psychology, Psychobiology, and Cognitive Science. The department also offers a comprehensive Ph.D. program with eight areas of study to approximately 200 enrolled graduate students. |
Key Responsibilities and Essential Functions | Function | Responsibilities | % Time | Strategic Partnership Management | • Develop and guide strategy for disseminating UCLA CDA’s message and materials into the hands of relevant state-level policy makers, practitioners, and associated organizations, in order to advance CDA’s mission. • Develop a strategy to build and maintain relationships with a focus on state policy influencers such as advocacy organizations, professional associations, and technical assistance providers that support youth-oriented service providers, in order to advance CDA’s mission. • Assemble and guide CDA’s inaugural Advisory Board on Policy & Practice, consisting of influential members from the public and nonprofit sectors, to advise on the Center’s strategic direction. • Develop policy evaluation metrics and benchmarks with respect to state partners and key stakeholders and generate tools for measuring state policy progress for the Center, consistent with best practices in the field. | 40% | Policy Research Analysis | • Amplify research of local and state-level policy landscape relevant for adolescents and youth, and identify individuals and organizations who could use developmental science principles to drive new policy and practice agendas. • Research, analyze, and recommend to Policy & Practice Director all fellowship and continuing education programs and opportunities to engage current students or early career policy scholars in the Center’s mission and research synthesis activities. • Serve as the lead for state focused policy briefs and related materials relevant to issues impacting adolescents. • Design strategies for prioritizing research requests submitted by funders, with a particular focus in CA and PA legislative and administrative priorities, and create engagement plans for policy outreach. | 25% | Policy and Practice Engagement | • Represent the Center as a policy expert in highly visible forums such as briefings, conferences, symposia, policy convenings, and media engagements. • Counsel the Center’s staff and affiliates, including internal and external researchers, students, fellows, and faculty, on how to engage effectively with policy audiences, with a particular focus on state government offices and policy advocacy organizations. | 15% | Project and Event Management | • Organize, plan, and run events with UCLA CDA and Advisory Council on Policy & Practice. • Update CDA’s online policy resources, STEPS for Youth. • Design a biannual policy-relevant podcast series that investigates the intersection of developmental science and state-level policy. • Explore and partake in the California Statewide Summit on Adolescence. • Develop and guide the execution of the Center’s state-level learning communities geared toward policymakers or youth-serving professionals with key stakeholders. • Plan special events, such as webinars, workshops, panels, and other public-facing events to amplify CDA’s role as a trusted source of developmental science and respected convener on issues related to adolescence as a developmental period. | 20% | | | | | |
