POSITION SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Assistant Vice Chancellor, and close collaboration to the Campus Fire Marshal, the Hazardous Materials Specialist is responsible for promoting and ensuring fire and life safety through inspection, education and enforcement.  The incumbent will assist with classification of hazardous chemicals and serve as a technical reference in enforcing the California Fire Code regulations pertaining to hazardous chemical use, storage and disposal.  This position will perform plan review and inspection services in new and existing buildings related to hazardous materials and fire and life safety. The incumbent will also integrate building occupancy data into the campus Chemical Inventory System (CIS) in order to fully develop the tracking/reporting capabilities of that system.

Hazardous Material Management

Develop and implement a Fire Prevention Hazardous Materials Inspection Program. Ensure ongoing compliance with California Building Code and California Fire Code, and other applicable regulations for the proper storage, use and handling of hazardous materials. Organize, schedule, and conduct inspections of existing facilities for compliance with hazardous materials regulations - interacting with department, laboratory, and shop personnel. Adapt to the needs of each department.

Investigate & Reconcile Hazardous Material

Investigate and resolve complaints regarding hazardous materials storage, handling and use. Review Hazardous Materials Inventory Statements (HMIS) and hazardous materials classification of facilities and respective control areas. Provide training to faculty, students and staff on Control Areas" and "Maximum Allowable Quantities" concepts to ensure their facilities and operations are code compliant. Review building and other plans for facilities using or storing hazardous materials. Inspect new construction for facilities using and storing hazardous materials.

Hazardous Material Response

Respond to hazardous materials incidents to support the emergency responders and the campus Hazardous Materials Response Team, if required. May act as Fire Marshal or Assistant Fire Marshal as assigned; and perform other related duties as required. Assists with special events and other fire prevention assignments as necessary.

Demonstrated working knowledge of: California Code of Regulations, Title 19, and Title 24, Parts 1-9; National Fire Codes (published by the National Fire Protection Association).
