POSITION SUMMARY

Under the direction and supervision of a school administrator, the Librarian provides library assistance to staff, students and the school community in the Library Media Center including clerical and technical library support services as necessary. Works collaboratively with the classroom teachers to support instruction. The Librarian is responsible for managing the Lab School library collections in circulation, organizing materials, and evaluation of expanding offerings of physical and digital materials. The Librarian is also responsible for budget allocation with general oversight of Lab School administrative leadership to monitor and recommend materials to be ordered and processes book and non-book media for the school Library Media Center within the budget allocation. The Librarian will design and implement reading incentive programs that promote and inspire children to develop independent reading skills through storytelling. The Librarian will assist students and staff to identify and locate materials within the school Library Media Center to support classroom related projects and assignments. They will work with classroom teachers to integrate the library research skills' level curriculum and instruct students in on-line research and information literacy skills. The Librarian is an integral part of the Lab School administrative and educational community to build children's literacy and love for reading.


Department Summary

Housed under the newly developed University Consortium of Schools (previously PreK-12), the UCLA Lab School is an innovative school for children ages 4-12 and a laboratory for teachers and researchers in the School of Education & Information Studies (SE&IS) at UCLA. The Business Office manages and supports an annual budget of $11 million and manages over 100+ academic and careers employees, 30+ student workers, independent contractors, and volunteers.

1. Coordinates the use of the Library Media Center to support classroom instruction and ensure student access to information resources.

2. Sets and maintains guidelines to ensure a positive, productive environment for learning in the Library Media Center.

3. Establishes and maintains a schedule for school Library Media Center use in conjunction with school administration

4. Maintains the library circulation system and catalog, including digital materials, so that materials are accessible to students and staff.

5. Establishes and maintains efficient library procedures including circulation, shelving, and retrieval of books and materials.

6. Maintains the automated catalog and generates regular reports on circulation, spending and library use.

7. Manage Library budget allocation with general oversight of Lab School administrative leadership. Monitor, select, and recommend materials to be ordered and processes book and non-book media for the school Library Media Center within the budget allocation and with administration approval.

8. Designs and implements reading incentive programs (i.e., birthday book club, poetry slams, etc.)

9. Coordinates activities for book fairs with stakeholders

10. Coordinates Birthday Book Club activities with stakeholders

11. Inspires and encourages independent reading.

12. Promotes interest in children’s literature by storytelling.

2. Works with classroom teachers to integrate the library research skills’ level curriculum and instructs students in on-line research and information literacy skills.

3. Implement strategies to increase the effective use of the Library Media Center through collaboration with the classroom teachers to identify relevant content and by recruiting, training and scheduling parent volunteers and student assistants on the procedures and guidelines for Library Media Center operations.

4. Prepares bulletin boards, displays and sample materials to demonstrate the connections between the Library Resource Center resources and classroom projects.

5. Develops lists of books, authors and subjects to develop a lifelong love of reading in older children, including digital resources as well as physical materials.
