POSITION SUMMARY

Under the general direction of the Vice Chancellor, Legal Affairs and Managing Deputy Campus Counsel, and serving as a member of the campus legal team in coordination with the Office of General Counsel for the University of California, provide legal advice on the wide range of issues associated with the administration, management and operation of UCLA, including but not limited to business transactional advice, commercial contracts research and grant matters, and international activities. Advise the campus on patent, copyright, trademark, and other intellectual property matters, including intellectual property-related commercialization, collaborations, transactions, enforcement, policy, consultations, and dispute resolution. Work with faculty, senior leadership, and administrators to address a broad array of contract and transactional activities while promoting a culture of compliance and integrity within the University.


Department Summary

UCLA Legal Affairs Office of the Campus Counsel (OCC) serves as the in-house legal office for the UCLA campus, including its professional schools. In that capacity, OCC attorneys provide counsel and legal advice to officers, deans, faculty, and schools and departments of the University requiring legal assistance, and provide coordination and liaison between the campus, the UC Legal Office of the General Counsel in Oakland, and outside counsel engaged on behalf of the University.

Serve as a trusted strategic partner with University units and leaders with transactional legal needs, including Chief Financial Officer, Finance, Purchasing, Real Estate, Construction, Research, Contracts and Grants Management, Housing and others, providing practical legal advice and solutions to a variety of issues; negotiating, drafting, and reviewing a broad variety of contracts, MOU’s, services agreements, licensing agreements, real estate agreements, and other legal instruments; advising on complex business transactions, innovation and commercialization efforts and international initiatives.

Advise campus units and leaders on the promotion and protection of a wide variety of intellectual property issues (including patents, trademarks, and copyright matters) and licensing arrangements.

Provide Legal Advice 3

Review documents for accuracy, comprehensiveness, and compliance with all relevant regulations; review and advise on University policies, procedures and handbooks and updates thereto; providing guidance on policies or procedures that should be developed to promote compliant and efficient operations; supports process management of contracts into which the University enters so that they best serve the University’s needs and mission; advising stakeholders on risk and compliance matters; and executing all other duties and responsibilities assigned by the Vice Chancellor Legal Affairs.
