POSITION SUMMARY | Under general direction, supervise the performance of a patrol watch or a detail normally consisting of 3 to 8 sworn personnel. Provide functional supervision to Communications, Public Safety Aides, Emergency Medical Services, and Community Service Officer personnel assigned to the watch or working proximate hours. Perform administrative duties such as scheduling, disseminating policies, performance evaluations, handling citizen complaints and/or inquiries, etc. Also must be able to perform all the duties and functions of a police officer. | | | |
Key Responsibilities and Essential Functions | Function | Responsibilities | % Time | Supervision | Inspect and supervise the activities of sworn personnel assigned to a shift, watch or detail. (E) Ensure the proper performance of assigned duties by all personnel under their supervision by monitoring their adherence to UCPD Policies and Procedures, UCLA General and Special Orders/Policies. (E) Enforce all policies and procedures, rules, orders, regulations by all personnel under their supervision. Report all violations of established procedures and guidelines. (E) Initiate the immediate relief or suspension from duty of any employee when it is necessary to do so to protect the welfare of the employee, the integrity of the department, or the safety of the campus community according to established procedure and University policy. (E) Evaluate performance of employees by conducting performance reviews and initiating recommendations for discipline and/or termination of employees. (E) Provide functional authority in emergency situations for civilian employees such as Community Service Officers, Emergency Medical Technicians, Communications personnel, and administrative personnel not directly under their supervision. (E) Assume responsibility for command in the absence of a ranking officer. (E) Review crime reports for accuracy, proper language and clarity prior to final submission. (E) Disseminate orders, policies and procedures to all assigned personnel. (E) Respond to citizen complaints and inquiries in accordance with established procedures. (E) Serve as a department liaison with other units, departments and organizations, regarding emergency situations, special events or details, information dissemination, etc. (E) Conduct reviews and investigations regarding employee conduct as assigned. (E) Ensure the proper maintenance, use and operation of assigned equipment, materials and supplies by reviewing logs and performing site inspections. (E) Correct, approve and disseminate police reports/citations prepared by assigned personnel. (E) Recommend and refer assigned personnel for training and staff development as needed through observation of their performance of duties. (E) Review the collective work product of subordinates over a period of time to monitor and maintain professional and quality standards as determined by policy, the Lieutenant, and accepted measures of performance. (E) | 30% | Law Enforcement | Develop and coordinate department's response to an emergency and/or major demonstrations by assignment of personnel to specific duties, making proper notifications to University officials, i.e., Associate Vice Chancellor, Office of Emergency Management, Chief of Police, etc., taking command and control of the situation for the protection of lives and property. (E) Observe, review and approve all enforcement related activities of all assigned police personnel. (E) Supervise the taking into custody of all suspects to ensure that proper procedures are followed and adhered to with regard to probable cause, arrest and booking of suspects. (E) Provide supervision in the field at major crime scenes and major traffic accidents, as well as respond to routine calls where officer/s require assistance.
