POSITION SUMMARY

Under the supervision of the Director of Production, the Lighting Supervisor works in association with the Lighting Design Faculty, the Technical Director, and other managers in the Department of Theater in the planning, coordination, and supervision of all technical elements as it relates to electrics and projections. Overall responsibilities include installation, use, strike, maintenance, and acquisition of theatrical lighting and projection equipment and supplies for all Department of Theater activities including academic productions, Department events, venue rentals, and contracted projects. Provide supervision and management services for theater rentals and non-academic projects. Manage and maintain associated lighting equipment and facilities for use by students and all users of the Department's performance venues at a level consistent with professional standards. Train and supervise teaching assistants, students and technicians and assist teaching assistants with the student labs.

Management 1

In cooperation with student designers, faculty design advisors and production management, supervise and coordinate student crews during the process of implementing student and guest lighting designs including hanging, mounting, rigging, circuiting, focusing, coloring and striking equipment for productions. Train users on the proper operation and application of all lighting equipment. 1. In association with design supervisors, coordinate and conduct training sessions for designers to aid them in understanding the design applications of each piece of lighting equipment.  2. Assist lighting designers with selection and location of equipment appropriate to their design objectives.

3. Based on designers' light plots, determine the equipment needs for each production and schedule equipment usage to minimize conflicts between productions. 4. In association with production management, lighting designer, faculty design supervisor, associated faculty, teaching assistant and production staff, schedule load-in times and focus sessions. 5. In association with appropriate production personnel, load-in, connect, test and strike production lighting equipment for each production. 6. In association with lighting designer, faculty design supervisor and lighting class instructor coordinate and supervise the work of students during load-in, focus and strike of lighting equipment.

7. Design and wire practical electrical and lighting devices for productions. 8. In association with production managers and lighting designers, schedule and conduct equipment operation orientation sessions for board operators and appropriate running crew. 9. Prepare, maintain and distribute accurate lists of departmental lighting equipment inventories. 10. Maintain a supply and distribute copies of operation manuals and instruction sheets for all equipment. 11 In association with faculty, assist in formation and execution of lighting class agenda. Provide input and expertise to classroom lighting lab sessions.

Maintenance 1

Manage, repair and maintain lighting equipment including control consoles, dimmers, lighting fixtures, special effect instrumentation, video projectors, color scrollers, foggers, strobes, automated light fixtures and control and cables. 1. Perform routine cleaning, maintenance, alignment and operation checks and adjustments to keep all equipment operating according to manufacturers' specifications. 2. Perform routine operational checks of control. 3. Identify, locate and repair electronic and mechanical faults in lighting equipment and perform subsequent adjustments to ensure that equipment is operating according to manufacturers' specifications.

4. Make arrangements for outside repair of lighting equipment when necessary. This includes obtaining repair authorizations, contacting vendors and arranging for transportation of equipment as appropriate. 5. Maintain updated equipment service manuals, parts lists, vendor lists, catalogs, operation manuals and repair and service records. 6. Monitor and maintain a functional stock of spare parts for theatrical lighting equipment. Requisition and place orders for spare parts. 7. Maintain lighting equipment storage and repair areas in a neat and organized state. 8. Research options and make recommendations for the purchase and rental of lighting equipment appropriate to the facility and individual productions.

9 Maintain an overview of current developing trends in lighting technology and in conjunction with the Director of Production, consult and provide information on new equipment purchases as needed.

Resource Management 1

Supervise the use of Department facilities and equipment for various campus and public events. 1. In association with Event Manager, ascertain the technical and operational requirements of incoming events through meetings with Department staff and event organizers and submitted technical specification documents. 2. Make recommendations for equipment and labor resources for each event as required by event organizers and the Department of Theater. 3. Participate with other Theater Production staff members in the cultivation and hiring of casual staff employees.

4. Secure and supervise the appropriate technical labor force necessary for each event. 5. Plan and supervise the use of the facility and equipment for load-in, rehearsal, performance, and strike of each event. 6. Monitor all lighting related labor and supply costs for each event and provide final report for billing purposes upon the completion of each event.

Inventory Management

Maintain a working inventory of consumable production lighting supplies. Organize and maintain the storage areas to be clean and functional. 1. Monitor inventory. 2. Maintain current catalogs, vendor lists and parts lists. 3. Requisition and place orders for production and stock lighting equipment and supplies. 4. Rotate perishable supplies per manufacturer's recommendations. 5. Distribute supplies and complete and file recharge sheets as needed.

1. In association with designated staff, install permanently mounted lighting equipment. 2. Other related tasks as required by supervisor. Related tasks will include but not be limited to assisting in the installation and strike of theatrical audio equipment, and construction, moving and rigging of theatrical scenery and properties.
