POSITION SUMMARY | Under the general supervision of the Director of Performance Nutrition, the Performance Dietitian will assist in the planning, development, implementation, evaluation and management of the performance nutrition services provided to UCLA intercollegiate student-athletes. Primary responsibilities include: Providing individual medical nutrition therapy, team and departmental educational presentations to enhance the performance of competitive collegiate student -athletes to athletes belonging to Intercollegiate Athletic teams. Coordinate nutritional care as a member of multidisciplinary sports medicine/sports science team; Athletic Trainers, Physicians, Athletic Performance Coaches, Coaches, Team Psychologists and other Athletic Department personnel. Address nutrition-related logistical challenges to performance, such as campus dining hall nutrition, hydration, grocery store shopping, as well as nutrition while traveling. Coordinating the performance fueling program with the Food Operations Manager, input on travel snacks, hydration, and meal suggestions. Provide periodical educational cooking classes for student-athletes. Participate in patient care meetings and collaborate with Sports Medicine Staff regarding individual athlete care and health related department programs. Must possess ability to adhere to and comply with Department, University, NCAA and PAC-12 rules and regulations. | | | |
Key Responsibilities and Essential Functions | Function | Responsibilities | % Time | Performance | • Provide individual medical nutrition therapy to student- athletes belonging to Intercollegiate Athletic teams as referred by Athletic Trainers, Physicians, Athletic Performance Coaches, Coaches, Team Psychologists and other Athletic Department personnel. • Coordinate nutritional care as a member of multidisciplinary sports medicine/sports performance team. • Address nutritional challenges to performance, such as campus dining hall nutrition, hydration, grocery store shopping, as well as nutrition while traveling. • Provide or coordinate periodical educational cooking classes for student-athletes. • Develop nutrition care plans for student-athletes. • Coordinate with team staff on home and travel competition meals and snacks for respective teams. | 25% | Performance | • Address nutritional challenges to performance, such as diabetes, disordered eating, the Female Athlete Triad, food allergies, bone mineral disturbances, gastrointestinal disturbances, iron depletion, and iron-deficiency anemia. • Provide medical nutrition therapy, as needed, to help manage or treat medical conditions. • Counsel athletes on optimal nutrition for recovery from illness or injury. • Participate in student-athlete care meetings. • Assist with oversight of the Acosta Fueling and Recovery Station daily operations. • Collaborate with Sports Medicine Staff regarding individual athlete care and health related department programs. • Collaborate with the student-athlete’s family, physician, coach and other health professionals. | 20% | Performance | • Provide body composition and hydration assessments for athletic teams and individual athletes as appropriate in accordance with department policy. Document all clinical encounters in student-athletes’ medical record using UCLA Electronic Medical Record (EMR). • Refer student-athletes to other healthcare related services. • Act as a primary nutrition resource for Sports Medicine and Medical Staff as well as other Athletic Department personnel. • Travel intermittently with each team on an as needed basis- decided upon at the beginning of the season. • Attend Practice and AP sessions as able- decided upon at the beginning of the season. | 20% | Other Duties | • Acts as the liaison to Sports Medicine on new department initiatives and updates. • Assist with the coordination of the department’s nutrition education messaging and event planning. • Assists with teaching sports nutrition topics and mentoring Performance Nutrition Student Workers • Critically reviews literature on sports nutrition especially as it pertains to college health and assess its applicability to student-athlete health care. • Maintains a working alliance with CAPS (UCLA Counseling and Psychological Services) and assists with Disordered Eating Prevention programming. • Assist in providing and/or coordinating game day fueling and recovery nutrition for appointed teams. | 25% | Professional Development | • Maintain dietetic registration and continuing education requirements. • Stay abreast of current food, nutrition, and health issues and research related to sports nutrition. • Act as a representative Registered Dietitian in research projects with physicians on funded studies and present to appropriate Intercollegiate Athletic Departments. | 5% | Rules Compliance | •Comply with all Federal, State, University and Department requirements established pursuant to Title IX, including the mandatory reporting requirements for a “Responsible Employee.” •The DIA is governed by the NCAA, Big Ten Conference, Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF), and University of California System.
