POSITION SUMMARY | Under the general direction of the Radiology & Laboratory Services Manager, the certified phlebotomist performs phlebotomy duties, and works cooperatively with all team members to provide laboratory services. Key responsibilities include performing phlebotomy in outpatient setting, handling specimens appropriately, and instructing patients on self-collection procedures. This role requires strong attention to detail, excellent communication skills, and a commitment to providing quality patient care. | | | |

Key Responsibilities and Essential Functions | Function | Responsibilities | % Time | Blood Draw and Specimen Processing | Collect blood samples from patients in an outpatient setting and educate patients about the blood draw process to ensure comfort during the procedure. Process lab samples and requests by verifying lab orders, labels, and evaluate specimen acceptability. Instruct patients on special collection procedures for urine, stool, and self-collected lab tests and review the collected specimens for acceptability. Receive clinic-collected specimens from clinic support for processing. Prepare specimens for transport to appropriate testing areas or referral labs, while prioritizing urgent requests. | 40% | Front Desk and Clerical Operations | Provide customer service and maintain patient privacy for all interactions. Ensure accurate and timely laboratory testing by evaluating lab orders, inputting them into the electronic medical record (EMR), and troubleshooting issues that arise. This includes problem solving and communicating with patients, healthcare providers, reference laboratories, or other Ashe departments. Schedule and enter data for laboratory and radiology services, research specimen requirements for reference testing, and monitor self-requested lab order queue. Address incoming calls, research pricing for patients and insurance. Fax, file, and retrieve diagnostic reports as needed. | 40% | Laboratory Technical Support | Process specimens by sorting, centrifuging, and aliquoting them. Prioritize urgent specimens for timely processing and prepare specimens for transport to appropriate testing areas or referral labs. Maintain lab equipment and monitor supply inventory.
