POSITION SUMMARY

The Per Diem Licensed Vocational Nurse at the Arthur Ashe Student Health and Wellness Center provides on-demand patient care and clinician support on an as-needed basis. Under supervision and following written standing orders or clinician instructions, they perform vital signs assessments, injections, wound care, patient education, rooming, specimen collection, and EHR documentation in both primary care and specialty clinics. They adhere to departmental guidelines, university policies, and community standards of practice, reporting to the LVN Supervisor and/or the Practice Manager at the start and end of each shift and participating in debriefings to relay patient concerns, unfinished tasks, and supply needs. Licensed in California, they must demonstrate competence in basic vocational-nursing procedures, exercise autonomy within their scope while promptly escalating complex issues. The Per Diem Licensed Vocational Nurse will meet with the LVN Supervisor periodically to assess performance.

Key Responsibilities and Essential Functions

Support Nurses, Medical Assistants, Clinicians, and Staff

Under supervision, assist in case management and panel maintenance during assigned shifts, contributing to clinic operations through accurate, timely completion of delegated tasks. Maintain, promote, and model a collaborative approach to patient care by responding to patient and provider inquiries in the electronic medical record, participating in team huddles and conferences, and helping add patients to tracking registries for ongoing disease management. Stay aware of specific and overall clinic operations; answer phone calls to clinical areas with clear communication, routing or escalating issues as directed. Help monitor daily activities by following task assignments, flagging clinician or patient needs, and demonstrating cooperative support to meet Ashe Center requirements.

Exam Room & Nursing Station Support

Under supervision, assist with the preparation of exam and consult rooms for procedures—such as incision and drainage, laceration repair, skin biopsies, gynecology services, delayed menses evaluations, LARC insertions, and diagnostic testing—during scheduled shifts and under the direction of supervising staff. Review supplies for expiration, disposing of outdated items per policy, and support instrument sterilization following established procedures. After each patient visit, help clean rooms according to infection-control protocols (including safe sharps disposal) and carry out aseptic techniques as instructed. Monitor room stock levels against par standards and notify the LVN Supervisor or charge nurse when replenishment is needed to ensure continuity of care.

Office Visit Support

Assist clinicians during scheduled shifts with examinations and treatments across Specialty Clinics (Sports Medicine, Orthopedics, Allergy, ENT, Dermatology, OBGYN, etc) as directed. Anticipate clinician needs by reviewing patient charts in advance and prepare necessary instruments or supplies. Under clinician direction, provide patient education handouts or guide students to electronic resources, and reinforce self-care instructions, referrals, and device usage. Accurately document all activities and any notable patient responses (e.g., device refusals) in the electronic medical record, notifying the clinician as needed. Support procedures by helping administer birth control devices (IUDs, LARC, injections) and apply or fit orthopedic devices. Clean and restock the workspace per protocol.

Clinic Duties (Standing Orders)

Observes and reports the physical and mental condition of patients to the appropriate Registered Nurse, Nurse Practitioner, Physician Assistant, or Physician. Immediately notifies a clinician of any urgent or emergency situations. Performs tuberculosis skin testing, reading, and documentation as instructed and according to written standing orders. Assists in ordering chest X-rays or blood work for patients with positive skin tests as directed by a clinician. Administers immunizations under patient-specific or written standing orders and supervision. Notifies the clinician of any abnormal test results requiring further evaluation. Provides administrative support in maintaining logs and tracking devices (e.g., for biopsies, reportable diseases) as assigned.

Orders and Other Clinic Support

 

Assists in communication between patients, families, and providers. Responds to patient physical and emotional needs. Assists in daily operations of the Allergy/Immunization Clinic by performing assigned tasks. Helps monitor and restock supplies, maintains refrigerator and freezer temperature logs, and complies with state and federal immunization mandates as directed. Performs prick testing for allergies according to clinician orders. Assists in the preparation and management of intravenous fluids as instructed by a clinician. Supports decontamination and high-level disinfection procedures while following infection control guidelines. Administers aerosolized bronchodilator medication as instructed. Collects and labels specimens (including phlebotomy) and ensures their proper transportation

Patients Assistance  and Record Keeping

Documents procedures accurately in the electronic medical record as instructed. Records the chief complaint and gathers necessary information for the clinical visit as directed. Measures and records vital signs (weight, height, vision, temperature, blood pressure, etc.) accurately in patient charts. Reports any abnormalities in vital signs to the clinician. Assists patients with exam preparation, including providing basic instructions on dress and positioning. Contacts students as directed by clinicians to obtain or relay care information, following state and federal guidelines. Provides basic patient support and guidance in accessing Ashe Center services, including eligibility verification, fee information, appointment scheduling, and referrals to other Ashe or external services as direct

Administers Medications and Performs Procedures and Tests

Administers oral, intramuscular, and subcutaneous medications as directed by a clinician, following the proper Rights of Administration and documenting medications in the patient’s medical record. Correctly identifies patients using at least two patient identifiers. Performs procedures and tests such as point-of-care testing (e.g., dipsticks, rapid strep, COVID-19, influenza, pregnancy, glucose) as directed. Supports clinicians in conducting electrocardiograms (EKG), ear irrigation, basic first aid, injections, hot and cold applications, wound care, dressing changes, suture removal, pulmonary function testing, audiogram screening, spirometry, peak flow measurements, and oxygen administration as directed.

Builds positive patient relationships while adhering to the Ashe Center’s statement of patient rights and responsibilities. Uses computer systems, including the electronic medical record and email. Communicates verbally and in writing to document compliance with policies and procedures. Assists with medical assistant functions as instructed. Adheres to current organizational Performance Improvement priorities. Participates in quality studies through data collection as assigned.
