POSITION SUMMARY

Working in the Center for Accessible Education (CAE), the Disability Specialist assists in all elements of service delivery and program development for students registered with the CAE with various disabilities, including, but not limited to: neurodevelopmental disorders, acquired brain injury (ABI), psychological disabilities, and autism spectrum disorder. Major responsibilities include: Assess Verification of Disability forms, medical documentation, and psychological/psychoeducational evaluations to verify disability according to University, State, and Federal guidelines in order to determine appropriate accommodations and support. Provides information to UCLA students who suspect that they may have a disability and make referrals to on-campus and off-campus resources; provides specialized disability-related counseling for students; liaison with on-campus and off-campus departments and programs to coordinate services and to explain services for students served by CAE; leads and/or co-facilitates support groups and instruct small group workshops in disability management and advocacy; provides disability awareness presentations for campus faculty, staff and students. Prepares written program materials, and assists, when necessary, in other CAE services and functions.

The Center for Accessible Education (CAE) facilitates academic, housing, dining, transportation, and other accommodations designed to promote equal educational access for UCLA students with qualifying disabilities and provides services and programs for the population of approximately 48,000 UCLA undergraduate and graduate students, in compliance with UCLA's responsibilities under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Amendments Act. The CAE also supports the mission of Student Affairs to contribute to the teaching, research and public services purposes of the University. The CAE is a central student service unit within Student Affairs and is the sole UCLA department authorized to determine student eligibility for disability accommodations and services.

ASSESSMENT AND DETERMINATION OF SERVICES AND ACCOMMODATIONS

Work with a high level of autonomy to assess medical documentation to verify

disability according to University, State, and Federal guidelines in order to determine

appropriate accommodations. Provide information to students who request disabilitybased

accommodations and services via the CAE. Conduct intake appointments with

individual students and consult with other professional staff as necessary on case

determinations. Write confidential case notes for student files after intake or

counseling meetings. Liaison with on-campus/off-campus departments and programs

to coordinate services and address needs of students with disabilities. Work with

faculty and other academic personnel to coordinate appropriate academic

accommodations.

STUDENT/OFFICE SUPPORT AND TRAINING

Provide specialized disability-related counseling for students with disabilities,

including: disability management, compensatory strategies, assistive technology,

academic issues, and advocacy skills. Keep abreast of changes in disability law or

practice as it relates to the assessment of students with disabilities. Assist leadership

staff with in-service staff trainings when requested and/or necessary. Make

appropriate referrals to on-campus and off-campus resources for students with

disabilities, including: Financial Aid, Athletics, Career Center, Ashe Center, Counseling

and Psychological Services, Disabilities and Computing Program, campus tutorial

services, academic counseling, and on-campus and off-campus evaluation services.

CAMPUS AND COMMUNITY RELATIONS

Maintain and develop communications with other community resource organizations

for students with disabilities. Liaison with on-campus and off-campus departments

and programs to coordinate services and to address needs of students with

disabilities. Maintain close working relationship with counselors from each of the

colleges to assist students with disabilities in making appropriate choices of courses

and majors; athletics personnel; other campus personnel who might interface with

CAE-registered students. Provide consultation to other UC campuses regarding

program development, coordination, and implementation based on UC Guidelines.

Participate in collaborative activities with other Disability Specialists in the UC system,

as directed.
