SUPERVISION - Indicates that the incumbent performs a variety of routine duties within established policies and procedures or by referral to the supervisor’s guidelines.


POSITION SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Grounds Superintendent, perform a variety of manual unskilled duties to support the maintenance, repair, upkeep and alteration of campus property.  Work in cooperation with Grounds Equipment Operators and mechanics.  Responsible for loading and unloading of materials and supplies.  Excavation and backfilling of holes or pits, removal of concrete, asphalt, soil, rock gravel, soil shaping or modeling of soil.  Clean up, transport and consolidate debris, general refuse, and litter pick-up.  Weed, clear land, hand dig, bag sand, clear and clean drains.  Care of associated equipment and tools.  Make temporary repairs on roads, paths, walks, fences or drains as directed.  Performs other miscellaneous duties and basic functions in the routine maintenance or improvement of Campus property/grounds as assigned.

1. Assist journeypersons in various aspects of their work by providing manual labor, e.g., remove wall coverings, remove carpet and carpet base, move furnishings, equipment, and supplies; haul, carry, hold and lift materials and equipment. (E)  2. Excavation and backfill of holes, trenches, or pits; removal of concrete, asphalt, soil, rock gravel, soil shaping or modeling of soil. (E)  3. Load and unload building materials ranging from large items such as lumber and plywood to smaller items in boxes and crates, tools and equipment belonging to the various trades, office furniture and supplies by manual lifting and carrying; may use assistance of equipment such as forklifts, pallet jacks, etc. from truck to loading dock or designated area. Sort and distribute load contents from loading area to various shop areas or job sites. (E)  4. As directed, make temporary repairs on roads, paths, walks, fences or drains. (E)  5. Perform weeding, land clearing, and sand bagging; sweep, pickup and remove debris and refuse from outdoor areas; perform litter pickup. (E)  6. Operate and maintain a variety of power and/or hand tools and tools and equipment related to the trade. (E)  7. Upon completion of work, clean up job site and return equipment, materials and tools to designated storage areas. (E)
