POSITION SUMMARY

Under the supervision of the Mason and Roofing Shops Supervisor and or the Manager of the Paint, Mason, Sign and Roofing Shops inspect, maintain, repair, design, modify and or alter roofing of Campus infrastructure including all buildings, common areas and related structure, etc. Identify source of roof leaks and damage and make temporary and permanent repairs. Conduct water tests to verify integrity of completed repairs; perform on-going inspections; adhere to maintenance schedules; setup job by collecting and preparing all supplies and equipment. Inspect all complete projects and submit all labor and material charges appropriately. Apprise supervisor of job progress and to resolve any problem(s) related to the job. Provide direction to semi-skilled and unskilled workers. Established safety procedures at all times.

1. Identify source of roof leaks and damage. (E)  2. Maintain and make temporary and permanent repairs to roofs to waterproof roof. (E)  3. Conduct water tests to verify integrity of completed roof repairs. (E)  4. Perform on-going and systematic inspection of on-campus roofs, according to maintenance schedule to assess condition of roofs in order to determine repairs required. (E)  5. Implement pre and post-rain season maintenance programs to minimize water intrusion damage and increase roof longevity. (E)  6. Identify and document special characteristics of each roofing system to determine appropriate maintenance tasks and their frequencies. (E)  7. Respond to trouble calls involving emergency repairs as required. (E)

Installation and Modification

1. Work from blueprints, drawings or oral instructions in the modification and installation of Campus roofs in order to meet the requirements of construction and alteration projects. (E)  2. Report discrepancies in existing blueprints to Supervisor in order to keep existing as-built as current as possible. (E)  3. Demolish and remove existing roof system and related components as required. (E)  4. Install roof on new/existing buildings with material such as composition shingle, tile, built-up, and single-ply roofing systems, etc. (E)  5. Install insulation, tapered crickets, wood nailers, sheetmetal/lead flashings, drain rings, gutters, down spouts and all related components as required. (E)

1. With smaller projects and minor repairs, evaluate problem, extent of repair and determine appropriate material and equipment required to complete project. (E)  2. Submit completed work orders to Supervisor and or Manager (s) for closing out project. (E)  3. Request tools and equipment materials, parts, etc. and submit to Supervisor and or Manager(s). (E)  4. Verbally discuss jobs with Supervisor and or Manager(s) in order to keep apprised of job progress and resolve any problems related to job. (E)  5. Provide direction to semi-skilled or unskilled workers (Facilities Mechanics or Facilities Workers). (E)

1. Maintain accurate hours worked on each job. (E)  2. Operate and maintain a variety of power and/or hand tools and equipment related to the trade. (E)  3. Upon completion of work, clean up job site and return equipment, materials, tools, radios, pagers, and Kronos wands to designated storage areas. (E)  4. Follow established safety procedures at all times including inspecting tools and equipment for signs of damage, malfunction or deterioration on a regular basis. (E)  5. Ensure and transport materials, equipment and personnel to and from job site expeditiously. (E)  6. Respond to off-hour emergencies and overtime as required. (E)  7. Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as requested by Supervisor and or Manager(s). (E)

Working knowledge of the various roof types, materials, and methods of installations, including built-up roofing systems.

Skill in: installing composition shingle, tile and water-proofing membranes; assessing condition of various types of roof systems to determine repairs and/or maintenance required; modifying and/or adapting designs, procedures or methods to make necessary alterations and modifications.

Ability to: assess condition of all roof sheet metal such as pipe flashings, parapet wall flashings, scuppers, gravel guards and parapet copings; safely and skillfully operate the various standard tools and equipment of the roofing trade e.g. propane torch and fire extinguisher.

Ability to: troubleshoot roof installations to determine source of roof water leakage; read, interpret and understand technical language in specifications, schematics, and blueprints; work at heights and walk on sloped roofs.

Skill in: estimating material and labor requirements to accomplish tasks; adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing 4-digit numbers and fractions in order to calculate layouts, offsets, and provide accurate cost calculations to Supervisor
