POSITION SUMMARY

Highly autonomous in nature, the Resident Director sets and carries out the programmatic vision for a residential facility and oversees the residential team in supporting the mission and goals of the department. Train and supervise students and staff; programmatic implementation; student conduct, government advising; counseling; crisis response (active duty coverage). Create positive working relationships with colleagues, students, and Housing partners. This is a year round, live-in residence position.

Staffing/Supervision

Initiate personnel actions such as hiring, performance evaluations, counseling on disciplinary issues, and recommending corrective actions for effective staffing. Oversee 0-1 Assistant Resident Director, 0-1 Program Coordinator, 5-14 Resident Assistants, 5-14 Program Assistants, and 2-3 Office Assistants. Plan and implement training for student and professional staff through annual orientation and ongoing in-service programs. Supervise the work of the team members to maintain production levels.

Administration

Assist the department head in formulating, implementing, and evaluating annual and long-term goals for the department quarterly. Interpret, inform, implement, and maintain department policies and procedures in the residence hall and suites. Authorize and monitor the use of common areas, facilities, and program equipment daily. Oversee programming funds in student government budgets. Recommend operating budget priorities and capital improvement needs annually. Manage building occupancy, including room assignments and contract terminations. Provide regular status reports to the department head. Collaborate with residence hall operations staff to enhance program delivery. Analyze and report on student needs and programs.

Program Management

Develop, implement, and evaluate programs to achieve department goals. Authorize and coordinate all programs in the residential unit. Supervise department staff, student government, and other groups in programming activities. Participate in planning and implementing department-wide programs and activities. Use the campus GEM car to attend events and manage event supplies.

Counseling

Counsel students on personal concerns, academic difficulties, roommate conflicts, and community issues during daily office hours and emergencies. Refer residents to appropriate campus services for specialized problem resolution.

Student Conduct

Communicate, interpret, execute, and enforce residence hall and University conduct regulations, as well as State and Federal laws, within residence halls and suites. Investigate complaints of resident misconduct. Resolve charges by interviewing alleged violators, conducting judicial proceedings, and imposing or recommending necessary sanctions.

Advising

Communicate and interpret residence hall and University guidelines for student organizations and group activities. Provide guidance and training on student governance and group dynamics. Advise individuals, student groups, and student government on programming for diverse needs. Attend and observe student government meetings as an ex-officio member weekly. Serve as a resource for student groups and provide additional referrals as needed. Act as a Campus Sexual Harassment Information Officer.

Emergency Response

Inform residents and staff about emergency procedures and laws. Collaborate with housing operations, police, fire department, and Fire Marshall to develop, implement, and evaluate responses to emergencies. Work with police, paramedics, Student Health Services, and Student Psychological Services to assist residents with severe health issues. Provide administrative response during on-site emergencies in residence halls or suites. Oversee emergency operations as the duty supervisor 25-30 days/year. Act as the first responder to resident crises for approximately 13,000 on-campus residents, managing incident response, student staff, collaborating with campus partners, and following up with affected parties.
