• Coordinate program for children and parents in the classroom. Work with classroom staff to maintain program quality as outlined in the Exemplary Program Standards (CA State Department of Education, 1992) and National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) Accreditation criteria • Work eight hours daily, incorporating planning time and parent conferences • Initiate, plan and implement program for children by facilitating a collaborative planning process with other teaching staff, working together to plan and supervise children's activities • Take responsibility for supporting teaching teams to plan and set up appropriate activities daily in curriculum areas such as language arts, dramatic play, multicultural awareness, manipulative toys, arts and crafts, block play, problem solving, science, nutrition and outdoor play • Mentor and support other teachers to plan and carry out a developmentally appropriate daily schedule that includes times for play, rest, toileting, eating, problem solving and nurturing • Ensure that written plans are made, available to staff, parents, and other authorized participants and curriculum plans and daily schedules are posted • Orient new classroom teaching staff; provide or ensure provision of on-the-job training for all personnel in the classroom and • Welcome and orient parents of children who are new to the group; assist parents and children in the separation process; support teaching team in planning and problem-solving to enhance quality • Establish a regular staff meeting schedule and conduct meetings for classroom staff • Maintain a safe and healthy indoor and outdoor environment for children and participating adults within guidelines established by State licensing regulations • Establish an opening and closing routine for each day in collaboration with teaching teams • Ensure that developmentally appropriate activities are provided throughout the day • Facilitate the establishment of clean-up and transition routines for changing activities throughout the day • Administer first aid to injured or ill children • Assist children in cleaning themselves; bathe and diaper infants and toddlers when appropriate • Establish an effective and cooperative relationship with parents of children in the group; support teaching team when challenges arise • Interact daily with parents and give brief reports of the child's experience in pertinent areas; provide guidance for other teachers regarding parent communication, as needed • Preschool teachers: hold scheduled parent conferences each year with the parents of each child to discuss the child's needs and progress. Infant/toddler teachers: schedule quarterly Needs and Services Conferences with parents • Hold impromptu conferences at parents' request when appropriate • Participate in parent education meetings and workshops • Oversee or perform recordkeeping duties as required by state agencies (Licensing, California Department of Education (CDE), California Department of Social Services (CDSS) and the Child Nutrition Division) and UCLA • Prepare written reports of parent conferences • Prepare written and online reports of child observations, DRDP and other online assessments • Prepare written evaluations of each child's development and progress prior to parent conferences; provide feedback and guidance for other teachers as needed • Supervise parents in completing daily records of their child's attendance and absences |
