POSITION SUMMARY | Under the direction of the Senior Public Programmer, the Part-time Projectionist operates the Billy Wilder Theater projection booth, as assigned, in support of film and media screenings for the Public Programs unit of the Film & Television Archive. Standard duties include projection equipment operation, additional help, and following safety guidelines. | | | |
Department Summary | UCLA Film & Television Archive, a department of the UCLA Library, collects moving images as works of art and as social and historical documents, restores and preserves moving images for current and future generations, curates collections, programs, and events using moving images to advance knowledge, and provides access to moving images for purposes of research, education, and enjoyment. The Archive's collections consist of over 500,000 holdings dating from the dawn of cinema to the present and cover a broad spectrum of content from major Hollywood studios films and network television shows to independent productions and news footage. The Public Programs unit of the Film & Television Archive conceptualizes live and virtual cinema programs for both in-theater exhibition and virtual screening platforms in a year-round capacity. Public Programs coordinates an ongoing calendar of screening events of contemporary, historical, and archival films curated from various sources, including the Archive's various collections as well as local & international studio & independent film archives and contemporary international distributors. Public Programs is responsible for programs from ideation through research to execution and works closely with the Motion Picture and Television Offices, Research, and Study Center, and Library Communications and Marketing to fulfill the Archive's mission to advocate for the accessibility of all moving images in all formats. |
Key Responsibilities and Essential Functions | Function | Responsibilities | % Time | Theater Projection Operation | 1. Responsible for operating projection booth, theater & lobby equipment. Utilize 70, 35 & 16mm single or double system Kinoton projectors, digital cinema/video reproduction systems. 2. Inspects motion picture prints, digital & analog elements before projection & submits condition reports according to motion picture industry standards & booth safety regulations. 3. Downloads files in accordance with Hammer AV capabilities; creates & tests DCPs to exhibition standards. 4. Computes ratios relating to projection aspect ratios, down angles, throw & lens sizes. 5. Prepares & runs a show to completion for audiences according to schedule & professionally. 6. Responsible for the overall presentation of each screening, including stage setting, recording & file delivery of introductions and panels. | 75% | Theater Projection Use of Equipment | 1. Maintains a clean, orderly working environment to protect films, tapes and disks against hazards of dust, humidity and static electricity. 2. Ensures that safety rules and regulations are followed as they relate to the professional projection of films, tapes, disks, and hazardous nitrate film. Assure conformity to City fire safety codes. 3. Recognizes violations of safety rules and regulations and report violations and the presence of unsafe conditions to the supervisor, department head and the Fire Marshall as appropriate. 4.Utilizes electronic testing equipment including voltmeter, oscilloscope, color temperature meter, screen brightness meter, spectrum analyzer, & frequency generator to measure & test operating performance of projection equipment. | 20% | Administration | 1.
