POSITION SUMMARY

UCLA's sports championship history stands out as one of the most impressive of any university.  Our student athletes perform at an elite level in their sports, studies, and public service.  As the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics (DIA)'s Assistant Athletic Director, Development, you will work in close partnership with the Executive Senior Associate Athletic Officer/Chief Development Officer, manage the UCLA Athletics major/principal gifts team and will provide oversight of the Wooden Athletic Fund annual giving program. As the Assistant Athletic Director, Development, you will develops and drive strategies to achieve fundraising goals with a focus on major gifts ($100,000+) and an emphasis on principal gifts ($3,000,000+). You will manage a portfolio of major and principal level donors and prospects. You will develop and build meaningful relationships with internal and external stakeholders to maximize alignment with institutional strategic goals and philanthropic support for those goals. In this vital role, you will collaborate with DIA and campus wide leadership and head coaches to build compelling cases for support around transformational gifts and deepen relationships with leadership donors and prospects. In addition, you will lead a team of fundraising professionals, providing strategic leadership, mentorship, professional development efforts and holding accountable to fundraiser activity metrics. As our Assistant Athletic Director, Development, you will also lead internal development team meetings. Major/Principal Gifts Fundraising & Stewardship

1. In partnership with Exec. Senior Associate AD/CDO formulate/implement a major/principal gifts program.

 

2. Lead efforts to ensure efficient marketing of program to potential new donors. Discover potential new donors by identifying through referrals from current donors, leadership volunteers, introductions at events, campus partners, and other avenues.

 

3. Evaluate current population of season ticket holders/WAF donors; focus on top three levels of annual donors ($30,000 to $100,000+ annually)/evaluate which donors capable of making major gifts of $100,000+ and principal gifts of $3,000,000+ to cultivate /solicit.

 

4. Build a portfolio of a designated number of major/principal gift donors/prospects maintaining active awareness at all stages of cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.

5. Contribute to development of complex cultivation and solicitation strategies for major and principal gift prospects. 

 

6. Partner with Exec. Senior Associate AD/CDO and Director of NIL Operations to develop NIL strategy.

 

7. Collaborate with Development Research Office to execute major and principal prospect and donor research.

 

8. Work with other development officers on campus to identify prospects for athletics. As appropriate, work closely with development officers in other areas to ensure coordinated efforts for prospects with multiple interests. Contribute to development of complex cultivation and solicitation strategies for these prospects.

9. Support Executive Senior Associate AD, CDO in coaching and providing professional development opportunities for development staff as appropriate.

 

10. Meet or exceed personal, team, and department metrics for contacts, visits/meetings, solicitations and dollars raised.

 

11. In collaboration with Sr. Director Stewardship, devise and implement a stewardship program assuring regular contact with prospects and donors through various stewardship and cultivation messaging, activities and events.

Program Management & Planning

1. Collaboratively assess, establish and articulate long-range goals/objectives that reflect funding priorities to increase support for athletics including major/principal/planned gifts, endowments, special/capital projects.

 

2. Prepare annual operating plan to facilitate achievement of annual fund and major/principal giving goals/objectives; consider department financial needs, programmatic objectives, market feasibility for private funding of various program components, ability of the development office to fulfill the expectations of sources of private funding.  

 

3. In consultation with Exec. Senior Associate Athletic Director, conduct annual review of results; determine program strengths/weaknesses and modify plans/strategies accordingly.

 

4. Provide budget management.

5. Provide broad oversight of Wooden Athletic Fund annual giving; guide Director of Development, Annual Giving and Growth on renewal/acquisition strategies; provide oversight and guidance on pipeline development.

 

6. Evaluate progress toward annual giving goals/objectives including efforts via direct-mail solicitations, telemarketing, and personal solicitations/events.

 

7. Create/collaborate on reports on giving efforts at all levels to identify/upgrade donors; support overall philanthropic goals of athletics through devising/implementing effective communications strategies.

 

8. Serve as a campus liaison to represent Athletics to all constituencies; convey accomplishments and priorities of Athletics to encourage and increase giving propensity.

Staff Management/ Supervision

1. Directly supervise professional and support staff providing leadership, guidance and supervision of daily activities as needed.

 

2. Provide strategic direction and goal setting for direct reports and support development opportunities for frontline fundraisers.

 

3. Conduct annual performance reviews and provide regular feedback on staff performance, addressing issues and providing appropriate training to enable success.

 

4. Ensure team accountability to meet individual/department metrics and productivity goals.

Rules Compliance

1. Remain current with and abide by the rules and regulations of the NCAA, Big Ten, University, and DIA.

 

2. Review and retain all rules compliance documentation disseminated by the DIA Compliance office as it relates to changes and updates to, and rulings on the current rules and regulations.

 

3. Report all NCAA/Big Ten violations per DIA policy.

 

4. Consult with DIA Compliance Administrative Staff regarding any rules and regulations in question.

 

5. Attend training classes as necessary.

 

6. Complete the annual Athletically Related Income form as required per department policy.

Minimum of seven years of experience and progressive responsibility as a professional development officer with a minimum of four years in collegiate athletics fundraising.
