POSITION SUMMARY | Working in the Center for Accessible Education (CAE), the Senior Disability Specialist serves as a technical expert in the field of Disability Resources with recognized expertise in specific areas related to services and accommodations for graduate and professional students. The Senior Disability Specialist works with a specialized population of graduate and professional students to determine reasonable accommodations and provide disability-related support and coaching on theses and dissertations, research responsibilities, internships and field placements, practicals and clinicals, and other academic milestones unique to graduate and professional programs. Other major responsibilities include: Interpreting and assessing whether determined accommodations conflict with or violate technical and academic standards set by the Division of Graduate Education, appropriate professional school, or accreditation agency, liaising with on-campus and off-campus departments and programs to coordinate services and to explain services for graduate and professional students served by CAE, and leading disability awareness presentations and programming for campus faculty, staff and students in graduate and professional academic programs. | | | |

Key Responsibilities and Essential Functions | Function | Responsibilities | % Time | GRADUATE & PROFESSIONAL STUDENT SERVICES & SUPPORT | Serve as the primary coordinator and expert for support services and accommodations for disabled students in graduate and professional programs, focusing on internships, theses, research, practicals, and other program-specific components. Collaborate with faculty, administrators, and the Division of Graduate Education's Policy Coordinator and Academic Case Manager, providing expertise on disability impacts to academic policies with minimal supervision. Lead team of lower level Disability Specialists in managing accommodations and support services for disabled graduate and professional students. | 45% | ASSESSMENT AND DETERMINATION OF SERVICES AND ACCOMMODATIONS | Specializes in supporting students with complex disability-related challenges in graduate and professional programs. Leads a team in reviewing and determining reasonable accommodations, independently assessing medical documentation to verify disabilities per University, State, and Federal guidelines. Provides information to students requesting accommodations and services, conducts intake appointments, consults with staff on case decisions and makes recommendations on best strategies and techniques. Maintains confidential case notes and collaborates with faculty and academic personnel to implement appropriate accommodations. | 30% | RESEARCH AND TRAINING | Research appropriate resources, both on and off campus, to provide insight and information when needed to graduate and professional students. Provide specialized disability-related counseling for disabled students in graduate and professional programs, including: disability management, compensatory strategies, assistive technology, academic issues, and advocacy skills. Manage support services within CAE for students seeking accommodations on comprehensive, standardized, and other professional qualification exams. Provide in-service staff trainings when requested and/or necessary. | 10% | CAMPUS AND COMMUNITY RELATIONS | Maintain communication with community resource organizations for disabled students and serve as a liaison between on-campus and off-campus departments to address needs and barriers related to graduate and professional program expectations. Collaborate closely with academic advisors, leadership, athletics, and other campus personnel to support disabled students' progress. Coordinate with HR and Employee Disability Management Services to support graduate student employees.
