POSITION SUMMARY

Reporting to the Director of Education and Interpretation, the Assistant Director of Education leads education initiatives of the Museum including the planning, implementation, scheduling, budgeting, and delivery of offerings for K-12 teachers and students, youth and family audiences, and university faculty and students. The Assistant Director of Education independently develops, presents and evaluates training programs, resources, and learning opportunities for teachers as well as K-12 and university students that deepen their understanding of the Museum's collections, especially as they expand upon existing curricula, arts and humanities coursework, and state and national learning frameworks. The Assistant Director of Education will define the strategies to grow the Fowler's K-12 and university gallery visitation as well as the K-12 museum-school partnership programs.  This position will also help develop and be responsible for sustaining ongoing relationships and strategic partnerships with university faculty for whom Museum initiatives and collections are a valuable teaching resource. A broad array of programs and services for families and youth are independently developed and implemented by the Assistant Director of Education, including art and music making sessions, festivals, and interpretive gallery resources (digital and analogue). The training and supervision of a small group of student educators who also serve as gallery teachers is a key responsibility of this position. The Assistant Director of Education works closely with curatorial, education, and communications staff to expand the museum's mandate for arts and humanities education, with particular attention to supporting California Proposition 28. The successful candidate for this position will demonstrate the visionary leadership required to achieve new levels of success in educational programming and outreach by serving as a spokesperson and advocate for educational programming at the Museum, communicating its vision to inspire enthusiastic participation in Fowler programs and define new audiences; inspiring and encouraging discussions about how to engage visitors and develop audiences; bringing the resources of the Museum to an increasingly broad audience, seeking innovative ways to attract and retain that audience, and keeping aware of best practices and new ideas and instructional means. Reporting to the Director of Education and Interpretation, weekly meetings are held at which time all job responsibilities will be presented by the Assistant Director of Education and plans for future programs will be discussed. .  In addition, work is reviewed when actions represent a deviation from standard guidelines. The employee is expected to act with independence in determining daily duties and priorities to accomplish goals and resolve problems.

The Fowler enhances understanding and appreciation of the diverse peoples, cultures, and religions of the world through dynamic exhibitions, publications, and public programs, informed by interdisciplinary approaches and the perspectives of the cultures represented. Also featured is the work of international contemporary artists presented within the complex frameworks of politics, culture and social action. The Fowler provides exciting, informative and thought-provoking exhibitions and events for the UCLA community and the people of greater Los Angeles and beyond.

Educational Outreach to K-12 and university Audiences

1.Reporting to  the Director of Education and Interpretation, conceptualizes, researches, and implements all school, university, and teacher services. 2. Independently develops and writes K-12 curricula for teaching with museum collections. 3. Initiates and maintains outreach to campus faculty for whom museum initiatives and collections are a valuable teaching resource.  Acts as academic liaison with campus faculty to encourage their use of museum collections and resources. Works with the Director of Education and Interpretation and curatorial staff to develop larger partnerships with faculty around upcoming exhibitions and projects. 4. Independently conceptualizes and creates all teacher services courses developed for special exhibitions and the museum's permanent collections gallery.

5. Is solely responsible for directing and supervising age- appropriate gallery teaching methods for use in school gallery programs. 6.. Envisions a new strategy for school visits, with a goal of engaging 15,000-20,000 students per year, while maintaining tour calendar, and schedules student gallery teachers as necessary. Is solely responsible for scheduling  university classes and is well versed in presenting  gallery talks to visiting university and K-12 classes. 7. Envisions a new framework to train part time student gallery teachers (5-10 each year) and others, drawing on the latest pedagogies in museum  education (5-10 per year). 8. Independently evaluates curricular materials for K-12 and university educators prepared in conjunction with special exhibitions.

. 9. Conceives and directs special K-12 partnerships developed in conjunction with museum's changing exhibition program. 10. Independently manages school and teacher services, and youth and family program budgets. 11. Works with development office to identify funding sources for school and family services, and is able to develop and write proposals to fund special projects. 12.Designs and implements evaluation studies and data collection as it pertains to school and teacher services.

1. Conceptualize public program offerings for youth and families in concert with museum's mission. 2. Strategizes and delineates long- and short-term goals for youth and family audience cultivation and development. 3. Implements all youth and family programming and special events including workshops, family days, concerts, and classes/camps. Hires, supervises, and evaluates all artists and other specialists to function as program presenters. 4. Synthesizes humanities/arts based themes from permanent and temporary exhibitions and interprets content for youth and family audiences.  5. Identifies and cultivates special target audiences for youth and family programming. 6. Writes and edits educational outreach components of grant proposals and reports, as directed by supervisor.
