POSITION SUMMARY

Under the Supervision of a Patrol Sergeant, the Public Safety Aide ensures the safety of the UCLA campus by performing the following duties and tasks: mobile patrol of campus; taking low level reports; and preparing reports and performing support duties as needed in other areas of the police department. The Public Safety Aide maintains the highest level of integrity and sensitivity while interacting with a very diverse community, establishing professional relationships with campus partners and providing a public face for the UCLA Police Department.

We do this through patrol, rapid response to calls for service, investigations, education and implementation of preventative strategies. Our work, grounded in a community policing philosophy, utilizes campus partnerships as the most effective approach for insuring a safe campus.

Patrol

Perform unarmed, uniformed patrol of UCLA campus property to act as deterrent to crime and an official resource to the UCLA community, according to defined patrol areas and beats. (E) Respond to direction of UCPD Dispatch and/or police officers to patrol or deploy to general areas or particular locations to ensure specific coverage of an area. (E) Utilize mobility aids like bicycles to cover ground quickly and speed response to identified areas of concern. (E) Observe and report suspicious activity or persons, and security and/or safety hazards. (E) Respond to disruptive individuals, groups, or situations to deter, deescalate, and provide information and guidance in order to preserve the working academic environment of the University; and/or liaise with UCPD Dispatch to ensure appropriate response. (E) Respond to the vicinity of police calls within normally patrolled or deployed areas and provide safety overwatch for responding officers. Interact with and provide information and context to concerned members of the community in order to assuage bystander concern. (E) Assist police officers in the field, when directed, by setting up perimeters, searching for suspects, maintaining crime scene integrity, or otherwise providing personnel support, when needed. (E) Maintain logs and/or make reports about duties, tasks, or interactions performed during regular patrol or deployment. (E) Note issues with the UCLA physical plant and report those issues, as appropriate, to UCLA Facilities. (M) Assist members of the public with lost vehicle location, wayfinding, and general information and directions. (M) Disseminate public safety information to UCLA staff, in person, at various locations within assigned patrol areas. (M)

Relief and Fixed Post Duties

Relieve fixed post security as needed and assigned, to cover breaks, late arrivals, or absences. (E) Act as a Station Officer at the UCPD Police Station front counter, to greet and triage members of the community, take reports, and otherwise provide information and direction to the public, as needed. (E) Perform Security, as directed, at assigned fixed posts and/or defined patrol areas on a temporary or continuing basis, as needed. (E)

Other Duties and Tasks

Perform other duties, as needed, required to ensure safety on the UCLA campus. (E) Assist other department personnel, as assigned, with tasks or projects requiring additional staff. (E) Testify in court, when required, due to participation in, or observation of, arrests or events that result in trial or legal action. (E) Assist designated staff at Counseling & Psychological Services (CAPS) by transporting patients who have been placed on a voluntary "5150" hold from CAPS to Ronald Reagan Medical Center along with aforementioned staff, adhering to set procedures, in a University vehicle provided for the purpose. (E) Under emergency circumstances and natural or man-made disaster, assist with logistical support, emergency response, and public assistance, at the direction of the Incident Commander. (E)

Reporting and Background Check Requirements

Background Check: Continued employment is contingent upon the completion of a satisfactory background investigation.

Pre-Placement Physical: Employment is contingent upon the completion of a satisfactory physical examination.
