POSITION SUMMARY

As Director for the Office of Public Health Practice (OPHP), the position will serve as technical lead of public health practice. The incumbent provides leadership in working with faculty, departments, the Dean's Office, campus stakeholders and academic and community partners in matters related to graduate public health practice across the organization and is a key member of the leadership team for the MPH programs. This includes but is not limited to analysis of APEx program, identifying partnerships and funding opportunities, including grants, for school-wide practice training support, and management of program, including administering policies, and supervision and training of career staff and/or graduate student employees (e.g., graduate student researcher). The incumbent is responsible for developing and maintaining partnerships and collaborations with local, national and international partners.  The incumbent leads decision-making pertaining to funding allocated by the Dean's Office for internships, while also maintaining direct collaboration with the Office of Development & Alumni Affairs to ensure seamless alignment of organizational goals and donor interests.

Program Outreach & Development

1. Develop and maintain relationships with community partners and public health practice stakeholders, including identifying potential partnership/internship sites in rural areas, Indian Health Services/tribal organizations, local and state health jurisdictions, and national and international non-governmental organizations and industries.

2. Technical lead for public health practice. Facilitate relationships between FSPH and campus partners as well as local, national and international academic and community organizations for internships, externships, practica, capstone projects and speaking, engagement and research opportunities for students, staff and, faculty.

3. Research, identify and share best practices and school priorities with respect to framing and communicating public health practice to FSPH departments, current and prospective students, alumni, and the public health practice community.

4. Lead public health practice outreach for the APEx program and other community engagement initiatives, including developing outreach programming and promotional materials to showcase the diverse range of disciplines and scope of practice-focused activities within FSPH.

5. In collaboration with FSPH Development & Alumni Affairs, develop and maintain relationships with alumni involved in public health practice through internship outreach campaigns, fellowship campaigns, and other opportunities for alumni involvement (e.g., guest speakers, panels, mentorship opportunities, informational interviews).

6. Develop and maintain relationships with campus-wide and UC partners.

7. Attend community meetings and conferences to promote FSPH public health practice initiatives and increase FSPH visibility in public health efforts.

8. Engage with the Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health (ASPPH) Practice Section and Career Services Assembly to inform best practices related to curriculum development, professional development, community partner engagement strategies, APE programming and compensation, and evolving CEPH requirements.

9. Develop processes and protocols for APEx Program across FSPH departments and offices to ensure alignment in structures and communications for all stakeholders involved.

10. Manage activities and lead meetings with department APEx Directors to share best practices, common approaches and systems, and supporting spaces for collaborative discussion and problem-solving.

11. In collaboration with FSPH Career and Professional Development Office (CPDO), develop skill-building trainings/workshops and disseminate materials that support MPH students with application of coursework to applied practice experiences and guide transition from APEx Director support to CPDO for post-graduation career planning.

12. Design and maintain records/database of FSPH public health practice activities, contacts, and resources.

13. Create and maintain a system to track real-time internship securement across departments to identify trends, inform outreach, and identify any students not on track to complete graduation requirements.

14. Lead data collection for mandatory campus-wide reporting purposes (i.e., UCLA Administrative Policies & Compliance Office, UCLA International Education Office, etc.)

15. Collect, analyze, and share annual data from academic departments regarding student internship placements and preceptors, site/organization location and information, funding information, scope of work, population served, and production of CEPH portfolio.

16. Collect, analyze, and share annual data from exit surveys and student/preceptor evaluations to evaluate the program's success.

17. Lead school-wide sessions on APEx requirements and manage process and coordination with departments in the design and implementation of other school-wide events such as orientation, internship/opportunity fairs, and post-internship sharing opportunities.

18. In collaboration with Office of Marketing and Communications, create and design OPHP’s webpage and social media. Update as needed.

19. Host events spotlighting current public health practice hot topics, emerging issues, and workforce needs.

20. Design and plan immersive short-term public health practice opportunities for FSPH students, staff and faculty.

21. In collaboration with Office of Student Services, establish eligibility criteria, application cycles, and processes for APEx funding, and serve as first-level approver for student proposals, ensuring graduate-level, CEPH-aligned projects.

22. Identify funding opportunities, including grants, for public health practice and training activities.

Program Administration

1. Provide updated and timely progress reports to the Associate Dean of Public Health Practice.

2. Lead strategic planning and community engagement activities and efforts for the Office of Public Health Practice and assist with developing programming and/or recommending best practices.

3. Collaborate with departments and other FSPH offices to ensure timely understanding of CEPH accreditation requirements.

4. Institute affiliation agreements and coordinate the process with FSPH organizational partners and the multiple campus units involved including APEx Directors, Program Managers, Campus Counsel and Risk Management. Establish new agreements and maintain existing ones.  Additionally, coordinate with FSPH Research Support Office and UCLA Health to track affiliation agreements related to health care restrictions (i.e., VA, HIS, etc.) for UCOP.

5. Review and share information with department APEx Directors on policies and procedures related to insurance and liability of students and school for internships, including those that are global/international so they can guide their students.
