POSITION SUMMARY | Under the direction of the Data Architecture Manager at the Office for Research Information Systems (ORIS), the DBA & Data Analyst is responsible for overseeing the operation of database systems for campus-wide applications related to research administration. The DBA & Data Analyst's role is to ensure that application development follows our organizational standards and practices, research and develop improvements to these standards, introduce new technologies to the organization, and manage central resources such as databases and identity management. The DBA & Data Analyst is responsible for working with application developers on ensuring that application architectures and data models are consistent with sound design practices and adhere to internal convention. Incumbent will manage database resources and review database audits and system logs. The DBA & Data Analyst is also responsible for following database policies and procedures to ensure the integrity and availability of databases and their accompanying applications. Other responsibilities may include assisting with application integration of single-sign-on or identity/access management solution, facilitating cloud/PaaS integration of applications, developing reports and business-friendly data "views" or other interpolations of data across multiple sources for business users. Must be able to communicate well with staff at all levels of the organization, work effectively with little supervision in a 24x7 operational environment. | | | |
Key Responsibilities and Essential Functions | Function | Responsibilities | % Time | Application Development and Architectural Support | 1. Document models for new database development and/or changes to existing ones through data flowcharting. 2. Analyze transactional application data requirements and work with team to design table models and relational data architectures to best meet application needs. 3. Work with application developers and peer architects on data access layer development to facilitate adherence of data access layer to data design requirements. 4. Adjust data models to take advantage of native data access support by adhering to standard naming conventions and best practices. 5. Review application designs to ensure adherence to best/standard practices. 6. Ensure applications are properly leveraging existing services and resources. 7. Assist with configuration and management of central application resources such as application host clusters and single-sign-on. 8. Assist with transitioning applications from local dedicated hosting to service platforms, i.e. cloud implementations. | 40% | Data Analysis and Warehousing | 1. Facilitate data warehouse development by analyzing application data sources and designing data staging tables to import data into warehouse as directed. 2. Work with business stakeholders and business relationship managers to provide end-user accessible warehouse data, such as in SSAS cubes. | 30% | Database Monitoring and Operational Support | 1. Monitor database system details within the database, including stored procedures and execution time, and implement efficiency improvements. 2. Respond to and resolve database access, backup and recovery, and performance issues. 4. Advise on the allocation of physical data storage for database systems. 5.
