POSITION SUMMARY

Reporting to the Head of the Public Services, Outreach, and Community Engagement (PSOCE) unit, the Public Services Student Supervisor (PSSS) recruits, trains, and supervises PSOCE student assistants in support of public service operations. The PSSS manages the quarterly student schedule, oversees and directs daily tasks, manages ongoing student projects, and trains PSOCE students on all PSOCE operations. The PSSS fulfills e-reference requests and supports instruction and outreach activities. As part of the PSOCE team, the PSSS works collaboratively to coordinate, monitor, and enforce LSC policies, procedures, and workflows. The PSSS works alongside the Reference and Technical Services Coordinator in support of reading room operations and reader services. The PSSS assists the Collections Access Coordinator with daily paging and preparation of materials as needed to provide efficient services to the public. The PSSS is a highly collaborative role interfacing within LSC and the UCLA Library to provide efficient and optimal service.


Department Summary

Library Special Collections (LSC) builds and stewards special collections resources, services, and operations. The department consists of four teams: Curatorial; Processing/Center for Primary Research and Training (CFPRT); Collection Management (CM); and Public Services, Outreach, and Community Engagement (PSOCE).

 

• The Curatorial Team is responsible for collection development and acquisition of materials in support of research and teaching.

• The CFPRT makes collection material discoverable and accessible through ethical and iterative processing in a pedagogical model.

• The CM Team develops and implements policies and processes to ensure responsible stewardship of collections.

• The PSOCE Team integrates public-facing operations for LSC including reference and instruction, programmatic events, and activities.

 

The entire staff of approximately 30 FTE work together holistically to build, preserve, and provide access to the outstanding rare and unique holdings of the UCLA Library. LSC works closely with our colleagues within the Distinctive Collections portfolio to steward a range of international resources in support of UCLA’s mission for the betterment of our global society.

1.Hires, trains, & supervises students: incl. schedule mgmt, daily tasks scheduling, project mgmt. & review & reappointment process. 2.Assists w/oversight of reading room & reader services. Helps to develop & implement policies, procedures, & workflows in support of LSC public svc operations, & communicates w/dept. admin. staff to maintain inventory of reading room & supplies. 3. Oversees hold shelf for reader requests & activities & collaborates to ensure timely delivery of paged materials. 4.Coordinates w/Teaching & Learning Libr. to administer paging requests & coord. w/library colleagues in prepping materials for instruction. 5.Revises & updates LSC Student Orientation Manual. Assists w/daily tasks: record keeping, event prep, & other LSC projects. 6. Coord. opening & closing of dept.

Reference & Specialized Outreach

1. Assists with triaging and responding to researcher and reference questions via telephone, email, and in-person. 2. Provides regularly scheduled reference service at the LSC Reference Desk, approximately 2-3 hours per week. 3. Triages and fulfills eReference requests, supports instruction and outreach activities, and assists with preparation for events or other programming as needed.

Experience working in a special collections public services environment in a university or college setting, or in a large academic library.
