POSITION SUMMARY

Under the guidance of the Undergraduate Advising Supervisor, serve as an Undergraduate Advisor in the Department of Psychology. As part of an advising team, help counsel nearly 5000 undergraduate students by assisting them in transferring credits, determining degree requirements, planning their academic programs, and understanding University policy and procedures regarding the three undergraduate majors, one minor, and one specialization. The incumbent also serves as Student Programs Coordinator to develop fieldwork opportunities in the community and research assistantships on campus; directs, coordinates, and participates in student workshops; works collaboratively with the Vice Chair of Undergraduate Programs, the Director of Student and Academic Services and the Undergraduate Advising Supervisor on projects; serves as staff liaison to the Department's undergraduate student groups; provides day-of coordination for the annual Psychology Undergraduate Research Conference (PURC), updates and edits Departmental and University publications.


Department Summary

The UCLA Department of Psychology is an exceptional department known for its excellence in research, teaching, and service. With a distinguished faculty comprising more than 60 ladder rank members, it is one of the nation's top psychology departments. Its undergraduate program is the largest within the Division of Life Sciences and the UCLA College, with nearly 5,000 undergraduate students enrolled across three majors: Psychology, Psychobiology, and Cognitive Science and a minor program, Applied Developmental Psychology. The department also offers a comprehensive Ph.D. program with eight areas of study to approximately 200 enrolled graduate students.

STUDENT ADVISING

A1. Confer with students (individually and in groups) for program planning, eligibility to enter the Psychology Department, and determining status within the Department.

 

A2. Participate as part of an advising team in the academic progress review of students in the Departmental pre-majors and majors (Psychology, Psychobiology, Cognitive Science) and assess the students' ability to successfully complete the undergraduate program.

 

A3. Explain policies of the Psychology Department minor (Applied Developmental Psychology) and the Specialization in Computing. Review students' progress and advise students on petitions to be accepted into the appropriate minor. Process student petitions.

 

A4. Evaluate and explain students' Degree Audit Reports utilizing online systems.

 

A5. Participate in the Departmental new students' orientation sessions throughout the year.

PROGRAM COORDINATION

B1. Research, Fieldwork,and Internships-  Coordinate research, fieldwork, and Internship courses.

 

B2. Directed Individual Research and Study Courses- Develop internship opportunities by selecting potential working sites in the community and research assistantships on campus; review and process learning contracts; administer all aspects of fieldwork and research courses in coordination with graduate TAs and academic coordinator.

 

B3. Departmental Workshops and Services for Enrollment, Casptone, and Career Options- Coordinate, schedule, advertise, and administer departmental workshops for students on advising, majors and minors, enrollment, career opportunities, etc.

 

B4. Student Groups- Facilitate students and serve as liaison to various departmental student groups including Psi Chi, UCLA Cognitive Science Student Association, and the UCLA Undergraduate Research Journal of Psychology. 

 

B5. Psychology Undergraduate Research Conference (PURC) – Coordinate day-of responsibilities for large-scale event, which include:

 

     B5A. Recruit faculty members, graduate students, staff, and student volunteers to attend and participate.

 

     B5B. Communicate with participants and faculty advisors about their assignments, event expectations, and presentation requirements.

 

     B5C. Prepare materials including name tags, certificates, signage, registration materials, guest materials.

 

     B5D. Organize dining arrangements including breakfast, dinner, refreshments and ambience details (decoration, location, etc.)

 

     B5E. Complete miscellaneous projects including preparing a research display and research literature, preparing the guest book, preparing hospitality services for guests, arranging for participant photography and event troubleshooting.

 

     B5F. Meet with the PURC Faculty Advisor, the PURC Coordinator, the Director of Student Services, the Undergraduate Advising Supervisor, and the Graduate Student Assistant after the review the success of the event and make suggestions for the following year.

ADMINISTRATION

C1. Work closely with the Undergraduate Advising Supervisor to develop new programs, policies, and procedures for the Undergraduate Advising Office.

 

C2. Aid in updating and editing information in the following University and departmental publications:  - Psychology Undergraduate Handbooks - Counselor's Directory - Major requirements information sheets - Quarterly newsletter

 

C3. Serve as liaison to the Office of Instructional Development Evaluation of Instruction Program to determine appropriate courses to administer online student evaluations on a quarterly basis.

 

C4. Assist in the coordination and creation of student feedback surveys for the Advising Office services. Collaborate with the Psychology Information Technology unit on determining appropriate software to administer surveys. Collect and record data.

 

C5. Coordinate the scantron request process for course exams for faculty on a quarterly basis and manage distribution with the Psychology Main Office.

 

C6. Participate in departmental events including commencement, Bruin Day, and the Psychology Undergraduate Research Conference (PURC).
