POSITION SUMMARY

Under the general guidance of the Senior Director of Career Services and in collaboration with the LL.M. counselor, cultivate and coordinate employment and networking opportunities, establish relationships with alumni and potential employers, manage an LL.M. interview program, develop career education programs for LL.M. and J.D. students, and provide career counseling to LL.M. students. The LL.M. Career Services Assistant Director oversees career services of 200 UCLA LL.M. students. The incumbent cultivates relationships with employers and guides the LL.M. and SJD population in obtaining professional opportunities and/or practical experience during law school and after graduation. The Assistant Director must navigate managing the expectations of 200 LL.M. students while providing support, guidance and opportunities for their professional development. The LL.M. Career Services Assistant Director must be able to lead and skillfully communicate with LL.M. students from diverse backgrounds from across the globe. The incumbent oversees programming for this student population, including planning and organizing events, such as a large interview program and speaker series, and hosting employer site visits.  The incumbent also establishes mentorship opportunities with key lawyers and employers for both LL.M. and J.D. students. An ideal candidate will have a Law degree and legal experience, a demonstrated ability to build a professional network within the legal market, and knowledge of various types of legal practice. The candidate must be able to effectively network with employers from various fields including law firms, business entities and public interest organizations.

1. Proactively engage in employer outreach to cultivate and implement job opportunities for LL.M. and S.J.D. students. (E)  2. Conduct strategic analysis of LLM students' service needs and propose new initiatives to address service gaps. Design and oversee execution of effective counseling services. (E)  3. Create and disseminate promotional and informational materials that educate employers about LL.M. and S.J.D. students. (E)  4. Take a leading role in managing the annual alumni mentor program for all interested J.D. and LL.M. students and alumni. (E)  5. LLM Interview Program

1. Lead communication with employers and consortium law schools for the UCLA Law LL.M. Interview Program (interview program). (E)  2. Market the program, recruit employers, and oversee the organization and execution of the annual interview program. (E)  3. Manage Symplicity database for the interview program and ensure all student and employer data is accurate. (E)  4. Collect detailed data of the interview program to track success of the interview program and make recommendations for future programming opportunities. (E)  5. Assist students in preparation for the NYU LL.M. Interview Program.

Counseling

1. Develop workshops and presentations about career opportunities and career skill areas (resume writing, interviewing, and job search). Cultivate a network of speakers to participate in these programs. (E)  2. Actively identify and expand LL.M. career programs, building upon an established and working infrastructure, including programs such as the newly established five By-Region LL.M. receptions, which serve as a welcome gesture and a networking opportunity with UCLA law alumni and local professionals and the Onsite Learning Programs (to law firms, court, and DOJ). (E) 3. Assist with the development of publications, brochures, handbooks, and handouts covering relevant areas of career planning and placement for LL.M. and S.J.D. students. (E)

 4. Teach, advise, and counsel LL.M. and S.J.D. students in their career development by addressing areas of self-assessment, goal-setting, resume-writing, interviewing skills, career paths, and job search strategies, as well as various fields of practice and alternatives to traditional practice. (E)   5. Develop, maintain, and promote advanced degree student section of the Career Services website. (E)

Alumni Relations

1. Develop effective strategies for establishing an LL.M. alumni network. (E)  2. Actively engage with LL.M. alumni through specific programming such as email campaigns, semester events, speakers sessions, and end of year gatherings. (E)  3.
