POSITION SUMMARY

Under the general supervision of the Program Chair and the Boyer Hall Administrative Supervisor, provide primary administrative and program support to ensure the optimal functioning of the Bioinformatics Interdepartmental Ph.D. Program. 

Advise students and faculty mentors regarding University and program policies and procedures governing graduate education.  Coordinate recruitment, admissions and orientation for incoming students. Monitor academic progress for all students in the program and advise faculty and students on available courses of action.

Coordinate curriculum, course offerings, program requirements, and teaching evaluations. Provide fellowship and other funding information. Track graduate student support stipends, fee payments and awards. Serve as staff member on the program's governing committee. Serve as liaison to university's Graduate Division and other graduate programs and campus committees.


Department Summary

The central mission of the Bioinformatics IDP is to train talented and highly motivated students to become next-generation leaders in the field of Bioinformatics. We offer rigorous and integrated training for students interested in undertaking research at the interface of computer science, mathematics, statistics, biology, and biomedicine to address the fundamental challenges of data-rich research in biosciences.

Program Administration

1. Keep detailed records of student progress including rotations, mentor matching, committee meetings, written and oral qualifying exams and thesis defense scheduling.

2. Plan and manage all recruitment events.

3. Coordinate the admissions process, assembling documents, communicating with the admissions committee and tracking decisions.

4. Manage enrollment for the incoming class, submitting documentation to DGE, advising students on timelines, housing and funding.

5. Provide logistical support for students and faculty meetings. 

6. Establish/revise courses in CIMS and OASIS. Reserve classrooms, facilitate teaching evaluations and grade submission as needed.

7. Develop and revise program's Graduate Student Handbook

8. Ensure students enroll in required number of units each quarter

Student Support

1. Serve as primary point of contact for students regarding all aspects of their academic progress. Counsel students in academic difficulty and assist in developing an academic plan to support progress as needed.

2. Serve as primary point of contact for students interested in joining the program, providing information about the program environment, including research, academics and funding.

3. Support students in difficulty, referring them to campus resources as appropriate.

4. Advise students and faculty on available fellowships, facilitating nominations and submission of internal applications (Dissertation Year Fellowship, Cota Robles etc).

5. Assist students seeking TAships and coordinate with hiring departments to connect students to open positions.

Communication and Institutional Relations

1. Serve as the primary point of contact for administration of the program.

2. Attend faculty and administrative meetings to represent the program.

3. Attend local recruitment events and occasional conferences during the year, to increase visibility of the program.

4. Maintain program website with up to date information.

5. Track student success after leaving the program. Maintain contact with alumni to encourage future support for the program.

6. Respond to requests for information from Graduate Programs in Bioscience. Division of Graduate Education and other stakeholders.
