POSITION SUMMARY

Planned giving provides meaningful opportunities for our donors to integrate their charitable interest with their tax, estate and financial plans. As a Director of Gift Planning, your work will make a significant impact in ensuring that our donors' philanthropy not only maximizes tax benefits and income for life, but also creates a legacy that will make a difference in areas important to them. As a member of UCLA's Office of Gift Planning, you will become part of a dynamic, collaborative and innovative team that offers long-term opportunities for personal and professional development as part of our robust External Affairs enterprise serving UCLA.

 

In this role, you will qualify, cultivate, solicit and steward planned giving donors to increase individual gifts to programs campus-wide, as well as assist in growing the overall donor base. You will develop and execute long- and short-term strategies to secure both planned and major gifts from individuals in support of the University's mission and strategic plan. You will serve as a resource to unit-based Directors of Development and other External Affairs and will work collaboratively with colleagues across campus to enhance the pool of planned and major donor prospects. Your knowledge and experience of gift planning will assist development professionals across campus in planned giving arrangements, technical information and gift planning strategies.

Cultivation, Solicitation and Stewardship

1. Participate in the full complement of activities to identify, cultivate and solicit prospects for gifts in excess of $100,000.

 

2. Assist Development professionals across campus with planned giving arrangements, technical information, and gift planning strategies.

 

3. Develop giving opportunities and appropriate case statements; prepare/deliver gift-planning presentations to a wide variety of audiences, including other professionals in charitable/estate planning professions.

 

4. Align donor interests with university needs; present concepts of various planned giving arrangements along with resulting tax benefits; direct the preparation of written proposals and/or other special materials for use in specific solicitations.

5. Conceptualize, create and distribute appropriate materials to promote areas of priority for planned gift support.

 

6. Develop long-range, comprehensive strategies and timetables for the successful cultivation, stewardship and solicitation of individual for planned gifts as appropriate.

 

7. Extend the courtesies of the University to donors and volunteers as appropriate.

 

8. Arrange appropriate opportunities for academic leadership, faculty and unit-based Directors of Development to meet with potential donors; encourage the active participation of donors and volunteers when appropriate.

9. With stewardship staff, devise/ implement customized stewardship plans to assure regular contact with donors.

 

10. Manage follow-up reports and contact with donors on use of their gifts; provide vehicles for donor’s continued awareness of UCLA’s needs to encourage continued giving.

 

11. Maintain active awareness of designated number of prospects at all stages of cultivation, solicitation and stewardship.

 

12. Meet or exceed performance standards and goals established by the department for contacts, visits, solicitations and dollars raised.

Prospect Identification

1. Identify/qualify gift-planning prospects through rating and screening, gift models, prospect list segmentation and analysis, and one-on-one contact with donors and volunteers, including any regional development committees.

 

2. Create core of prospective donors for planned gifts and maintain activeness of those in prospect pool at various stages of identification, cultivation and solicitation.

 

3. Create additional vehicles and methods of identification of prospects as necessary.

 

4. Work directly with donors, prospects, attorneys, accountants, and financial advisors on any needs for specific information concerning gift opportunities that include outright and deferred arrangements (bequests, life income plans).

Program Planning and Management

1. Prepare and/or review all donor planned gift calculations/illustrations, gift annuity contracts and charitable trust documents for donors/prospects on behalf of PG team.

 

2. Maintain appropriate information/records on all donors and prospects under management.

 

3. Prepare annual operating plan for major planned gift activity and periodic donor and/or prospect reports; review/revise as needed.

 

4. Participate on task forces and in other forums that address the comprehensive development program and gift planning efforts at UCLA.

 

5. Collaboratively participate in the design of goals/operating plans for the Gift Planning program; contribute to evaluation process.

6. Develop/maintain an understanding of the education, research, and community service missions of the university to develop a working knowledge of goals, objectives, programs and priorities of the campus in general and specifically the units in relation to gift planning efforts.

 

7. Work in partnership with appropriate financial, administrative and legal offices and colleagues for the Gift Planning Program to coordinate the execution of documents and other elements relating to our shared responsibilities in maximizing the gifts to UCLA.

 

8. Participate in the planning and execution of development/gift planning continuing education for deans, department chairs, faculty, volunteers, and professional staff.

Minimum of three years of experience as a gift planning professional, ideally in a higher education or medical setting, or related field working

with outright gifts, deferred gift arrangements and experience with a wide variety of assets, i.e., real estate, securities, closely held stock, tangible personal property.
