POSITION SUMMARY

The Senior Assistant Director of First-Year Recruitment plays a critical role in advancing UCLA's recruitment and enrollment goals. Reporting to and working closely with the Associate Director of Domestic Recruitment, the position involves high-level strategic planning, coordination, collaboration, oversight in the execution of recruitment/yield initiatives. The Sr Asst Dir is responsible for ensuring recruitment efforts are effective and sustainable while being mindful of resources. This position identifies and prioritizes target high schools, analyzing historical enrollment trends, demographic data, growth potential and geographic reach. This position strategically allocates resources with the aim to maximize UCLA's visibility, foster strong relationships and support a diverse and talented applicant pool. The position manages recruitment initiatives at approximately 550 high schools throughout California and nearly 100 schools throughout the US. The position provides leadership, strategic influence, and high-level collaboration while serving as the Admission liaison to the UC Office of the President, UC campuses, UCLA, UCLA Alumni Association and specialty schools representing the university in a variety of efforts. The position provides leadership for and supervision of 5 professional staff, 3 Assistant Directors and 2 Admission Officers. As a key managerial role within Admission, the Sr Asst Dir is responsible for conducting performance evaluations, identifying and supporting professional growth opportunities, and fostering a culture of excellence and accountability. The position also plays a key role in the undergraduate application review process, reviewing approximately 1,600 first-year and 200 transfer applications, and supporting specialized reviews such as supplemental, school-based, waitlist, and appeals. This role ensures the successful completion of application review by direct reports through active supervision, training, and performance monitoring.

Office of Undergraduate Admission supports UCLA student enrollment goals through recruitment, admission, and yield practices consistent with the mission and values of the university. We seek to recruit and enroll high-achieving, talented students from diverse backgrounds from throughout California, the US, and abroad to both benefit from and contribute to one of the leading research universities in the world.

First-year Recruitment

A1. Responsible for developing a recruitment strategic plan for CA and the US that identifies high schools targeted for visits, participation in critical college fairs/conferences, defined partnerships with local area community-based organizations and developing budgets. (E)

A2. This responsibility includes managing and ensuring efficient allocation of resources, both staffing and budget are aligned with institutional enrollment goals. (E)

A3. In addition to managing domestic recruitment, directly responsible for managing multiple assigned territories, including specific high schools in LA County, multiple CA counties and several US States. (E)

A4. In collaboration with UC Office of the President and UC campuses, responsible for participating in committees, workgroups to develop workshops, recruitment programs and managing event staffing plans to align with program needs and attendance. (E)

A5. Represents UCLA at high-visibility engagements with prospective and admitted students, their families, and school counselors, serving as a key institutional representative that communicates information regarding admission policies, application processes, and the university’s academic and student life opportunities. (E)

A6. Serves as the liaison to Alumni Affairs’ Bruin Recruitment Program which is comprised of approximately 100 alum volunteers which represent UCLA at high school college fairs in approximately 75 college fairs throughout the state. (E)

A7. Oversees the planning and coordination of training sessions for alumni volunteers statewide, including the assignment of staff resources and scheduling of publication distribution. Additionally, ensures all efforts are executed efficiently and in alignment with program goals. (E)

Recruitment and Yield Activities

B1. Provides strategic oversight and serves as the supervisor point of contact for the planning, coordination, and successful execution of recruitment events for prospective students and counselors, such as Information Sessions (in person and virtual), Counselor Coffee Chats, Counselor webinars and other recruitment events. (E)

B2. Oversees budget planning, agenda development, and the coordination of speakers drawn from Undergraduate Admission and key campus partners across UCLA. (E)

B2. Works with Admission Administrative staff and UCLA campus administrators to determine and coordinate facility and space requirements for program execution. (E)

B3. Participates in the development of promotional recruitment material, offering feedback throughout the planning process for brochures, PowerPoint presentations and website. (E)

B4. Develops and prepares comprehensive summary reports, conducts data analysis to evaluate effectiveness of initiatives, and provides informed recommendations for strategic improvements and process enhancements. (E)

B5. Provides leadership in coordinating UCLA's participation in large-scale college fairs such as NACAC, both in California and out-of-state. In collaboration with the Associate Director, leads strategic planning and staff assignments to ensure alignment with institutional diversity goals, including geographic and regional representation. Supervises logistics including registration, transportation, publications, and communication strategies to effectively engage a diverse prospective student audience—often exceeding 1,000 attendees per site. Oversees coordination with other UCLA offices and academic departments to ensure unified campus representation and successful event execution. (E)

B6. Coordinate, plan, monitor and assess UA first-year yield receptions (UA hosted Bruin Bound) in California, and at select cities throughout the U.S. Coordinate participation from key UCLA offices e.g. Housing/Residential Life, Financial Aid & Scholarships, Alumni Affairs, undergraduate student panelists and travel via support staff. Monitor budget of approximately $40,000. Work closely with Associate Director, Domestic Recruitment, Senior Managers Deputy Director and Enrollment Management Communications Director to determine publication and presentation needs. (E)

B7. Collaborates with the Senior Assistant Director of Transfer Recruitment to coordinate the involvement of first-year recruitment staff in community college outreach and programming. (E)

B8. Provides cross-training and professional development to ensure freshman recruitment staff are prepared to support transfer recruitment efforts as needed. (E)

B9. Coordinate counselor sessions, secure senior leadership participation, identify high schools that will co-host event, develop communication flow and responsible for registration system. (E)

First-year Selection

C1. Review academic records for admitted students. Evaluate and make recommendations regarding admission offer for those who fail to meet admission provisions. Participate in review of denied freshman requests for reconsideration for admission (E)

C2. Participate in secondary review processes such as FY Supplemental Review, FY Tie-Break Review, School-based, Waitlist and Appeals Reviews and make recommendations for re-evaluation of admission status to Associate Directors. (E)

C3. Read freshman first-year and transfer applications as a participant in the read process. (E)

C4. Participate in first-year review of PPF (Provisional Problems Forms), consider academic changes and updates submitted by admitted students and make recommendations as necessary. (E)

C5. Participate in transcript verification, carefully review transcripts and ensure accuracy of application self-reported academic history section. (E)

C6. Responsible for ensuring that all supervised team members receive comprehensive training and maintain current knowledge of UC and UCLA admission policies and procedures. This includes proactively facilitating ongoing professional development, disseminating policy updates in a timely manner, and implementing quality control measures to ensure staff are equipped to provide accurate, consistent, and policy-aligned guidance to prospective students, families, and counselors. C7. Serve as resource for team members during the various application reviews and provide guidance as needed. (E)

UA Department and Liaison Responsibilities

D1. Serve as liaison to the UC Office of the President for year-round systemwide initiatives, including recruitment trainings, counselor conferences, and UC-wide events like UC For You and UC For Everyone. Represent UCLA Undergraduate Admission in collaborative UC-wide planning and implementation efforts, ensuring alignment with campus priorities and consistency in messaging and outreach strategies. (E)

D2. Act as the point of contact for UCLA Alumni Affairs to support the coordination, training, and engagement of alumni volunteers in undergraduate recruitment efforts. Oversee volunteer involvement to ensure a consistent and effective representation of UCLA’s values and messaging. (E)

D3. Collaborate with UCLA Parent & Family Programs to facilitate parent involvement in recruitment initiatives. (E)

D4. Participate in the department’s short- and long-term planning processes, contributing to the development of strategic goals, assessment of recruitment effectiveness, and allocation of resources. Support continuous improvement through data-informed recommendations and cross-functional collaboration. (E)

D5. Serve as a key resource in partnership with the Associate Director to support the development and annual updates of freshman recruitment presentations and associated communication materials. Provide oversight and input on content and design of recruitment publications (print and digital), ensuring materials are accurate, compelling, and aligned with university messaging and goals. (E)

E1. Provide strategic leadership and direct supervision to recruitment staff, ensuring clarity of roles, accountability for outcomes, and alignment with institutional goals. Foster a collaborative and high-performing team culture through clear expectations and supportive management. (E)

E2. Identify and implement ongoing professional development opportunities to strengthen staff competencies in recruitment and application review. Design and lead training sessions to enhance staff knowledge of admissions policies, institutional priorities, territory management, presentations and best practices. (E)
