POSITION SUMMARY

Under the general supervision of the Football Strength & Conditioning Coach, Executive Sr. Associate AD, NIL Operations & Sport Administration, and the Sr. Associate Athletic Director. Health, Performance, and Wellness, the Director of Football Performance Nutrition will assume leadership and responsibility for the planning, development, implementation, evaluation and management of the performance nutrition services provided to the football student-athletes. Provide individual and group/team nutrition counseling and education to enhance the performance of competitive student-athletes. Primary responsibilities include:  counseling individuals on daily nutrition for performance and health; translating the latest scientific evidence into practical sports nutrition recommendations; providing performance nutrition education for health/wellness programs, and maintain professional competency and skills required for professional practice. Incumbent will work with the Football Strength & Conditioning Staff, and Football Athletic Training Staff to integrate their work into the UCLA Football program.

Performance Nutrition Counseling and Education

• Assess and analyze dietary practices, body composition, and energy balance (intake and expenditure) of student-athletes in the context of athletic performance and health.

• Counsel athletes on optimal nutrition for exercise training (match nutrition to training phases and goals), competition, recovery from exercise, weight management, hydration, immunity, disordered eating, travel, and supplementation.

• Counsel student-athletes on achieving and maintaining a level of body mass, body fat, and muscle mass that is consistent with good health and good performance.

• Provide personalized meal and snack plans to promote achieving short– and long-term goals for athletic performance and good health.

• Develop and counsel on hydration protocols.

• Develop resources to support educational efforts.

• Educate in food selection and food preparation.

• Coordinate and manage menus, food production and distribution for team meals and catering for teams and individuals while traveling or at home with assistance from designated Football Staff members.

• Develop and deliver nutrition education presentations, demonstrations, or events on various topics related to nutrition for performance

• Recommend appropriate pre-, during, and post-exercise fluids and snacks for individual training, team practice, and competition.

• Travel with the team to away games, recommend appropriate pre-, during, and post-exercise fluids and snacks for individual training, team practice and competition.

Administrative Responsibilities

 • Supervise assigned performance dietitians.

 • Critically review literature on sports nutrition especially as it pertains to college health and assess its applicability to athlete health care.

 • Educate, mentor, and supervise dietetic interns and volunteers.

 • Develop and oversee nutrition policies and procedures.

 • Provide innovative oral and written nutrition education.

 • Evaluate nutritional supplements, including herbal supplements, for legality, safety, quality, and efficacy; and monitor use of appropriate supplementation.

 • Evaluate research proposals presented to the Athletic Department.

 • Acting member of the Health & Wellness Committee and member of the Supplement Committee. This includes regular meeting with the Health, Performance and Wellness Director’s Meetings

Administrative Responsibilities

• Liaison with Administration, Director of Performance Nutrition, and Football Strength & Conditioning Coach for all budget needs related to Football Performance Nutrition.

• Coordinate and administer special and extra team events.

• Assist, on an as needed basis, with all official and unofficial visits as permitted by NCAA rules and regulations.

• Perform administrative duties as needed.

• Assist the Football Head Coach, Recruiting Staff, and Operations Staff with any projects necessary per C. below.

Recruiting Duties & Tasks

• Work with the coaching and recruiting staff in the off-season to assist with on campus recruiting visits. This will include both unofficial and official visits to the UCLA Football program.

• Responsible for assisting in creation of the Football Performance Nutrition presentations that will be given to all prospective student athletes on campus visits.

• Responsible for collaborating with each Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coach in creating recruiting plans and strategy for each prospective student athlete.

• Maintain dietetic registration and continuing education requirements.

• Stay abreast of current food, nutrition, and health issues and research related to sports nutrition.

 • Comply with all Federal, State, University and Department requirements established pursuant to Title IX, including the mandatory reporting requirements for a “Responsible Employee.”

 • The DIA is governed by the NCAA, Big Ten Conference, Mountain Pacific Sports Federation and University of California System.  The incumbent is required to comply with the applicable rules, regulations and policies of those organizations.

    ◦ Review and retain all rules compliance disseminated by the DIA Compliance office.

    ◦ Report all NCAA and conference violations.

    ◦ Sign the annual NCAA Certification of Compliance form.
