POSITION SUMMARY

As the Executive Director of Development for the International Institute, you will be responsible for building and sustaining a development program designed to increase philanthropic support of the Institute's highest priority needs as determined by our leadership team. You will have the opportunity to work with UCLA alumni, volunteers, donors, parents, students, faculty and friends who are committed to the vital role of the Institute and your work will help create leaders, scholars and programs with significant impact upon our world.  As Executive Director, you will support and effectively promote the vital role the Institute plays in the academic life of the campus and broader community. This is an opportunity to leverage important philanthropy to enable and empower innovative education, pioneering research, dynamic public service, and community engagement. You will bring exceptional strategic thinking, leadership abilities and passion for advancing the priorities of the Institute to make a significant impact in achieving our philanthropic goals and objectives. As a member of the Institute and UCLA External Affairs, you will join a dynamic, collaborative and innovative team that offers long-term opportunities for professional development and growth.

 

The International Institute at UCLA is the university's bridge to the world, with close to 30 interdisciplinary research centers and graduate and undergraduate degree programs focusing on major world regions and global themes. As the principal officer for the Institute's advancement efforts, you will plan and implement a comprehensive development program in partnership with the Vice Provost and leadership team of the International Institute and in accordance with established academic priorities. In consultation with the Vice Provost, other Institute leaders, College Development, campus administrators, academic leaders and senior development professionals, as our Executive Director, you will provide leadership to development projects targeted to benefit the International Institute and other academic units. You will serve as a staff resource and provide counsel on strategic directions and interactions related to international prospects and donors; will develop strategies to identify and cultivate individual, corporate and foundation prospects and will determine market feasibility for academic priorities and provide advice and counsel to Vice Provost. In this role, you will also identify and recruit high-level volunteers to provide insight and guidance with regard to development issues in the international arena as well as formulate specific solicitation and other programmatic elements as necessary. As the Executive Director, you will manage and provide leadership, oversight and strategic direction to professional development staff that develop and implement comprehensive development efforts for the centers and programs within the Institute.  Acting as a vital representative for the University, you will articulate the mission of the University and development goals to the public and will facilitate the opportunity to foster special relationships with members of the international community.

Major Gift Fundraising and Stewardship

1. Create, continually refine/enhance and manage a portfolio of prospects for major and principal gifts and maintain active awareness of individuals, corporations and foundations in prospect pool at various stages of identification, cultivation and solicitation.

 

2. Prepare or direct the preparation of written proposals and/or other materials for use in specific solicitations.

 

3. Use available data to develop constituencies and identify prospects in relation to academic priorities.

 

4. Create additional vehicles and methods of identification of prospects, as necessary.

 

5. Make regular major gift solicitations using leadership where appropriate to further the academic goals of the Institute.

10. Devise and implement a stewardship program for the Institute to assure regular contact with donors through annual reports and various stewardship and cultivation activities/events.

Board/Volunteer Development and Management

1. Recruit, steward and manage a high-level Board and/or volunteer committee/s, dedicated to attracting transformative philanthropy.

 

2. Establish and maintain effective, high-level volunteer structure to provide counsel with regard to development matters and to assist with specific solicitations and other programmatic elements, as necessary

 

3. Assist leadership regarding identification of potential members and recruitment.

 

4. Work closely with leadership to identify relevant issues and develop topics for discussion by the Board and committees.

 

5. Develop or assist in the development of giving opportunities and compelling case statements.

6. Develop long-range, comprehensive cultivation strategies and timetables. Take advantage of broader cultivation opportunities when possible; create unique cultivation activities when appropriate.

 

7. Arrange appropriate opportunities for the leadership, faculty and other administrators as appropriate to meet with donors and volunteers in forums designed to engender increased interest in and support of the Institute.

 

8. Devise specific strategies and timetables for successful solicitation of individuals, corporations and foundations.

 

9. Provide full staff support to volunteers in the solicitation of prospects. Arrange for appropriate academic leaders to participate in solicitations as necessary and appropriate.

Program Management and Planning

1. Establish long-range goals and objectives for programs and activities that reflect Institute funding priorities as determined by leadership. Coordinate efforts with fundraisers in central development/other areas as necessary.

 

2. Prepare for review/approval annual operating plan and budget; facilitate achievement of program goals and objectives.

 

3. Plan/implement or oversee staff efforts for Institute annual giving programs.

 

4. Evaluate progress towards annual fund objectives, including efforts via direct-mail solicitations, telemarketing, personal solicitations and events.

 

5. Create department/Institute-wide reports on annual fund efforts to discuss with chairs and faculty as a means for donor identification and upgrade.

6. Support overall philanthropic Institute goals through devising alumni relations and communications strategies.

 

7. Conduct annual review of results; determine program strengths and weaknesses; in consultation with leadership, modify plans and strategies accordingly.

 

8. Serve as a member of the executive staff and campus liaison to represent the Institute to all constituencies. 

 

9. Work with the Institute’s communications team to assist the creation and implementation of communications plans to convey the accomplishments and priorities of the Institute.
