POSITION SUMMARY

This position will have primary responsibility for directing all career and professional development activities, resources, and programs for UCLA Anderson's working professionals MBA Programs – Executive MBA and Global Executive MBA Programs, as well as direct some of the leadership development aspects of the Executive MBA program. Specific functions include oversight of all career programming and career resources for these student populations (~1100) as well as serve as the executive career coach for individual career assistance to both student populations. Leadership development responsibilities for the Executive MBA Program include managing process for administering assessments (Birkman and 360), managing the Leadership Speaker Series, and working closely with the EMBA Program deans to identify leadership programming in addition to what students receive in the core curriculum.  This role will also have responsibility to oversee the tracking of post-grad career outcomes of FEMBAs comprising quarterly market research for the creation, implementation and reporting of annual US News and World Report and Princeton Review Graduate Surveys. Additionally, this leader will represents (as needed) UCLA Anderson Programs and CSD at events and conferences, serving as the primary spokesperson for Professional MBA career services.

 

The position will oversee and supervise the work of coaches, operations personnel, and any independent contractors associated with both the career and/or leadership development aspects of the EMBA and FEMBA programs, as well as supervise any work-study students. This position is a member of the both the Executive and FEMBA MBA Programs and reports directly to the Associate Dean of the EMBA and FEMBA Programs.  The Director of EMBA/FEMBA Career Strategy and Leadership Development will also have a dotted-line reporting relationship to the Executive Director of the Professional MBA Career Management Center (Parker CMC).

EMBA and FEMBA Leadership Development Responsibilities

1. Create and expand EMBA Leadership Development initiatives. Design, plan, and schedule implementation of leadership development program components, working very closely with EMBA Associate Dean, EMBA Program Director and relevant faculty members and others. Manage relationships with outsource providers of leadership development components, including the 360 assessment tool and also the Birkman. Create additional opportunities for workshops, lectures and other activities based on developmental needs of each class.

 

2. Be thoroughly familiar with course content of leadership-related required and elective courses in order to complement classroom learning with additional leadership development activities, speakers and workshops. Work with the EMBA Associate Dean, EMBA Program Director and appropriate faculty to create and implement leadership programs, activities, and curricula as needed.

 

3. Be thoroughly familiar with all aspects of leadership assessment tools in order to field inquiries and questions from students and better promote these resources among the EMBAs. Manage all activities in connection with assessments e.g. email coordination between outsourced providers and managing all communications with students regarding the assessments. Schedule and manage implementation of assessment tools and debrief sessions with students.

 

4. Manage the Leadership Speaker Series. Coordinate with the EMBA Senior Associate Dean, the Associate Dean and the EMBA Program Director to identify speakers for the yearly Leadership Development Speaker Series. Select and schedule speakers and topics which complement academic coursework and leadership development activities. Contact and schedule speakers, ensuring with the EMBA Program Managers that all details are handled (e.g. follow-up with speakers, issuing parking passes, obtaining bios, etc.).

 

5. Be present at all Leadership Development activities to assist faculty, guest instructors and speakers.

 

6.   Create, develop, and manage staff to deliver full on-boarding Career Leadership training course required for all new F/EMBAs admits. Create and develop course sites on Bruin Learn, including all deliverables, videos, pre-work, etc. Collaborate with F/EMBA Council, Admissions, and Student Affairs about content to ensure student engagement and satisfaction.

 

7. Direct leadership development evaluation process, using written surveys and focus group feedback from students. Also solicit feedback from faculty involved in the leadership aspects of the EMBA program.

 

8. De-brief feedback with EMBA Senior Dean, Associate Dean and Program Director and identify areas of improvement. Implement changes and enhancements based on program evaluation and feedback.

Career Development Responsibilities

1. Design and teach year-long series of quarterly EMBA / FEMBA career and professional development workshops offered during class weekends that address career advancement, professional development, career shifting and job search topics.

 

2. Develop and deliver series of tactical job search workshops using the media site or other platform for webinar delivery so that workshops can be archived and viewed on demand by EMBAs and FEMBAs (e.g. resume, networking, interviewing, negotiating, researching the job market, dealing with executive search firms). Also design and deliver an annual career management workshop for the Global EMBA students in August while they are  on campus for their UCLA Residential.

 

3. Contribute content to the Professional MBA Career Center's Anderson Career Tools" website for experienced and executive-level MBAs. Manage and expand content with articles, assessment exercises and activities, resources, reference information and web links specifically targeted to the career management needs of executive-level professionals. Work with ProMBA CMC Operations Manager on formatting and uploading website content edits.

 

4. Organize and hold periodic meetings or panel discussions for students with search firm executive recruiters.

 

5. Track EMBA / FEMBA career workshop activity.. Provide administrative and statistical reports periodically to appropriate administrators on EMBA . FEMBA student engagement with career resources, career workshop activity and evaluation feedback.

 

6. Work with the Class Council Career Representative for each class for guidance and support in creating career management programming for EMBA / FEMBA students.

 

7. Offer quarterly "EMBA Job Search Teams," (using a contract professional career coach as the group facilitator), for those EMBAs who are in "active job search mode," that would enable participants to meet weekly via teleconference calls in a group format while conducting their job search. Supervise the work of the contract career coach.

 

8. Track EMBA employment and career activity of EMBA students, after their first year and at the end of the program, via program evaluation process (i.e. mid-program survey, exit survey and program-end debrief with graduating class).

 

9. Create EMBA alumni network for career panels, speakers, outreach, mentoring to new and current EMBA students and to promote the Hire EMBA effort.

 

10. Work with EMBA Admissions to create marketing content for EMBA career and professional development activities on the public UCLA Anderson EMBA web page for prospective students.

 

11. Represent UCLA Anderson and the EMBA Program at seminars, conferences, professional networks, other business school affiliations and external meetings related to EMBA career development. Specifically, attend and participate in the annual EMBA Council Conference Career Service Sessions, as well as attend the annual meetings of the MBACSWP Alliance.

 

12. Direct FEMBA’s AFR program, including design, content creation, development, training, and management of the AFR Bruin Learn Course Site content, for FEMBA students; evaluate and refine AFR training and deliverables; and provide training/mentoring to Career Coaches on AFR process and requirements to ensure highest level of success for FEMBA students. Partner with Parker CMC (for Full-time MBA students) to ensure content continues to mirror the qualification requirements while remaining flexible to fit the needs of working students.

 

13. Manage and mentor yearly onboarding of leaders for functional FACTs [FEMBA Anderson Career Teams] in consulting, investment banking, and marketing and encourage additional FACT to form as the need arises. Each year identify, recruit and train new FACT leaders who can provide peer guidance to FEMBAs going through the AFR qualification process.

 

14. Create and conduct regular career webinars and workshops for job search and career management using career experts and published authors. Source speakers, arrange publicity and logistics and moderate during live sessions. Ensure that all sessions are recorded and accessible on ProMBA CSD website(s).

Individual Career and Executive Coaching

1. Provide executive-level individual career coaching (in-person and/or via telephone) to currently enrolled, graduating, and recently graduated EMBA students and Global EMBA students (GEMBAs). Maintain regular availability during weekends when EMBAs are on campus, including mealtimes on Fridays and Saturdays.

 

2. Coach GEMBA / EMBA / FEMBA students on creating individualized career development strategies and action plans for career advancement, career shifts and/or job changes.

 

3. Input counseling notes for each students and track career counseling activity.

 

4. Conduct twice-yearly counselor evaluation survey of students who have received individual career coaching. Provide administrative and statistical reports to appropriate administrators on individual career coaching activity and evaluation feedback.

 

5. Manage and administer all aspects of the EMBA Executive Coaching resource. Set timetables each year for 1st and 2nd round of executive coach availability to students, promote the resource to students, gather applications and coordinate with executive coaches on assignment of students. Add and/or replace executive coaches as needed (coaches are independent contractors). Send evaluations to students at the end of their executive coaching time.

 

6. Develop individualized strategies and action plans for students seeking career and job changes.

 

7. Coach students to research and evaluate career options, including compensation, strategic job changes, networking, and mentoring strategies.

 

8.     Educate students on the tools and resources available to them, including CareerLeader; Vault Career Guides; and content in F/EMBA Career portals online.

 

9.     Co-create with individual F/EMBA students customized strategies for career development utilizing alumni, other F/EMBAs, external resources, and databases.

Additional EMBA / FEMBA Program Functions

1. Prepare and deliver overview presentation of leadership and career development activities and accompanying written materials to new students at the annual EMBA Orientation Day.

 

2. Attend Class Council meetings to keep students informed of career and leadership development activities and to use as a sounding board when needed.

 

3. Assist the Senior Associate Dean and Associate Dean of the EMBA / FEMBA programs with aspects of the existing Program or with special projects/initiatives as needed or requested by them.

 

4. Provide support to admissions as needed, including presenting at information sessions for prospective students, and meeting with admitted students who may have questions about the leadership development aspects of the EMBA . FEMBA programs.

 

5. Oversee the UCLA Anderson Career portals for F/EMBA MBAs. Working directly with the Administrative and Operations Managers, provide direction and enhanced career and leadership content with articles; assessment exercises; resources; reference information; and original video content, including the management of Bruin Learn sites, and one onboarding pre-enrollment career site].

 

6. Collaborate with Leadership at Anderson (L@A) Executive Director to implement strategies and services for L@A participants.

3. Oversee a team of career services professionals, including both direct and indirect reports. Design and manage the organizational structure of the team to ensure alignment with strategic goals, making adjustments as needed to meet evolving departmental priorities and resource needs.

 

4. Responsible for conducting and overseeing the following activities: hiring, performance evaluation, training, work assignments, merit increases and reclassifications, discipline and discharge, complaint and grievance resolution.

 

5. Set work schedules for staff, which includes evenings and weekends.

 

6. Oversee compliance of independent contractor contracts and work products within UCLA corporate counsel parameters and regulations.

 

7. Oversee annual retrospective on career services team performance – including evaluating the effectiveness of Career Services and develop necessary actions / initiatives to continually improve the approach and effectiveness (e.g., team management, career services provided, student outcomes, and reporting)
