POSITION SUMMARY

Manage, coordinate and oversee the Department of Theater Scene Shop and its interaction with the other production units for a seamless transition from set planning to set building and load in and strike as well as set disposal for all departmental productions. Organize scene shop personnel, oversee employee scheduling, workflow, work quality and set timeline for the construction projects. Organize and supervise scene shop use, security and maintenance. Manage construction spaces, storage areas, and related spaces, scene shop inventory of supplies, materials, tools and hardware. Perform other related duties as assigned by supervisor, including occasional minor facility maintenance or improvements.

The incumbent is supervised by the Technical Director and Chair. The incumbent prioritizes and completes tasks within assigned goals and objectives and often in collaboration with the design faculty, Director of Production, Technical Director, shop supervisors and others in academic and administrative leadership. Periodic in-progress checks of work are made. Work is subject to review by supervisors.

Management

1. Manage and organize the work flow and task assignments in the scene shop from scheduling career and casual employees, students, teaching assistants and lab students to ensure timely construction of scenery.  2. In conjunction with the Technical Director, evaluate master show schedule determined by Director of Production to develop shop schedules for each production including shop construction time lines, and materials acquisition deadlines to ensure efficient production of scenery, including timely delivery for mounting, rigging, and mechanization on stage.  3. Prepare work lists of all machine and hand work to be accomplished on a daily basis.  4. Maintain inventory levels to meet the needs of the scene shop to be able to produce the scenery for each upcoming show within budgetary constraints.  5. Anticipate and order other supplies sufficiently in advance to guarantee arrival of such material when needed to maintain construction schedule within budgetary constraints.  6. Research, identify, and acquire all machinery, equipment, and tools for the scene shop to meet the scenery fabrication demands.  7. Oversee and ensure all tools and equipment are properly maintained. Evaluate shop tool and equipment for replacement and repair needs and take measures to ensure their functionality. 8. Identify and seek proper remedy for security deficiencies related to facilities, equipment, supplies or operational procedures and establish technical and qualitative work standards for all workshop projects.  9. Provide prompt and thorough response to requests from faculty and staff for information, special needs or suggestions when appropriate. 10. Manage all scenery construction and ensure all scenery is constructed according to specifications of Technical Director's plans. 11. In conjunction with the Technical Director, research and develop special construction techniques as required to ensure appropriate fabrication of designs. 12. In conjunction with the technical Director, organize and oversee the load-in" operation, and "strike" of theatrical productions and rentals. 13. In conjunction with the Technical Director, strategically facilitate "strike" activities in respect to reusable scenery pieces for storage and recycling to reduce waste. 14. In conjunction with the Technical Director, seek and implement new materials and innovate techniques in scenic fabrication within the assigned budget. 15. Participate in scenic design meetings between student designers, faculty advisor, Technical Director and Director of Production to discuss logistical and build questions and to facilitate that design ideas can be realized within budget and time parameters and propose innovative avenues on how to meet those parameters. 16. Attend all weekly production meetings. 17. Supervise the work of the scene shop production staff while also working on each build. 18. In conjunction with the Technical Director, conduct routine safety checks to ensure the policies and practices of the University's health and safety guidelines are being followed. 19. Financial Administration

1. Consult with the Technical Director on the scenic budget for each show and actual materials to be used in the build so the final estimate is as accurate as possible. 2. Monitor expenditures and purchasing records for each production to ensure each one stays within scenery budget. 3. Monitor expenditures and purchasing records for the maintenance, materials and stock budgets for the scene shop. 4. Monitor seasonal part-time and student employee expenses to stay within labor budget parameters set by the Director of Production. 5. Solicit cost estimates and work with vendors to negotiate repair, maintenance and replacement purchases needed to maintain a functional scene shop. 6. Other duties as assigned.

Shop Lead

1. Assist with directing and training the scene shop staff, shop teaching assistants, student crews and theater 14 lab participants in conjunction with area supervisors in the safe operation of theatrical equipment, regulations regarding use of rehearsal and performance spaces, and proper procedures used in running department productions. 3. Provide direction to part-time employees associated with the theatrical productions and rentals. 4. Oversee work schedules, work assignments, attendance, work quality and standards. Provide input and feedback on employee evaluations. 5. Actively participate in job interview for production staff. 6. Assist with the recruitment for open staff positions, part-time employees and student staff. 7. Other duties as assigned.
