POSITION SUMMARY

The Platform Engineer will play a key role in enabling the university's "cloud-first" strategy by designing, implementing, and managing the university's cloud- based infrastructure and services. This role's day-to-day work will involve a range of responsibilities, from architecture and provisioning to monitoring, troubleshooting, and ongoing optimization, ensuring that the university's cloud environment is secure, efficient, and effective.

 

The Platform Engineer will positively impact UCLA's operations and culture by ensuring UCLA's IT infrastructure is operable, secure, efficient, and effective in service of the university's academic mission. This team member will advance the University's mission by delivering exceptional information technology services comprehensively and consistently across faculty, staff, and students. This role will execute UCLA's vision while modeling UCLA's culture and values.


Department Summary

Infrastructure Services provides flexible, reliable, and secure traditional and cloud infrastructure services (network services, platform services, data center operations and management, and unified communications) enabling connectivity, productivity, and security for UCLA. Infrastructure services strives to optimize performance increasing storage, elevating the network, and reducing downtown.

 

Platform Services enables hybrid cloud for computing, storage, and services environments with a mix of on-premises infrastructure, private cloud services, and public cloud. This team creates seamless orchestration across various platforms to stimulate agility, scalability, reliability, and lower infrastructure costs. This allows for applications and components to interoperate across boundaries improving developer productivity as well as regulatory compliance and security. Platform Services oversees provisioning, hosting, and administration of physical and virtual servers and related storage. They maintain and provision core storage capabilities such as server storage and database backups.

1. Leads the design and implementation of the architecture of the cloud-based infrastructure, considering factors such as scalability, performance, security, and cost. Selects the appropriate cloud services, tools, and technologies that best fit the university's needs and requirements.

2. Configures cloud resources, such as compute instances, storage services, and networking components. Ensures that the infrastructure is properly deployed, maintained, and optimized according to the university's policies and best practices.

Platform Engineering and Cloud Infrastructure

1. Monitors the performance and health of the cloud-based infrastructure and services. Analyses the data, identifies bottlenecks or areas of improvement, and implements changes to optimize the performance, reliability, and cost-effectiveness of the cloud environment.

2. Works closely with the rest of the Platform Services team to ensure the security and compliance of the cloud infrastructure. Implements security measures, such as encryption, access control, and intrusion detection.

1. Seeks to problem solve, streamline, and improve efficiency by developing scripts and tools to automate various tasks related to infrastructure management, such as deployment, scaling, and monitoring. Implements Infrastructure as Code (IaC) solutions to enable version-controlled and consistent infrastructure management.

2. Understands and utilizes best practices to effectively troubleshoot and solve problems. Analyzes highly complex data sets in order to identify root causes. Makes sound decisions to benefit the organization.

1. In case of technical issues or incidents, diagnoses and resolves problems related to cloud services and infrastructure. Collaborates with other teams to address issues that span multiple domains.

Continuous Improvement

1. Keeps the university's cloud infrastructure and services up to date by continuously learning about new developments, trends, and best practices in the cloud domain.

2. Drives improvement for the university by reducing on-premises footprint and leading a cloud-first strategy for server provisioning and storage to reduce cost and optimize technology usage.

3. Facilitates innovation and continuous improvement by leveraging the latest industry knowledge to maintain awareness of new and emerging cloud technologies. Takes the initiative to experiment with new ideas and makes recommendations on adoption.

Project Planning & Management

1. Works closely with other members of the Platform Services team, as well as other teams involved in the "cloud-first" strategy, to manage projects, share knowledge, coordinate efforts, and ensure seamless integration of cloud-based services with existing systems.

1. Communicates cross-functionally to lead collaboration in the organization-wide effort to migrate data, applications, and servers to the cloud.

2. Identifies and escalate issues via communication channels to appropriate teams and personnel for further resolution.
