POSITION SUMMARY | The Assistant Dean of Student Services serves as a senior administrative leader responsible for the oversight and functional operations of the student life cycle at UCLA School of Law. Reporting directly to the Dean, this position provides strategic leadership, policy interpretation, and operational direction for two major units, Student Services and the Registrar/Records Office, and plays a central role in shaping and delivering an inclusive, high-quality student experience. This role intentionally bridges Student Affairs and Academic Affairs, with a dual focus on student life, student well-being, and academic success. The Assistant Dean serves as a key liaison between students, faculty, and academic leadership, ensuring alignment between academic policies, student support services, and the lived student experience. The position is highly student-facing and helps drive institutional efforts to support students' academic progress, personal development, and overall well-being from matriculation through graduation. The Assistant Dean provides strategic and operational leadership for all student affairs and student services within the School of Law, with responsibility for the day-to-day management and effectiveness of the Student Affairs/Student Services Office. This role ensures the delivery of comprehensive, high-quality student services, including student advising, registration, and enrollment operations. In close partnership with the Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs, this position also provides coordinated senior leadership and oversight of the Registrar/Records Office, ensuring alignment of academic and student services functions. Through this collaborative leadership model, the Assistant Dean of Student Services helps ensure the effective management of registration and enrollment processes and the stewardship of electronic student records. In addition to operational responsibilities, the Assistant Dean provides administrative leadership on the development and implementation of academic policies and programs that directly affect students. This role serves as an advisor to both Student Affairs leadership and the Law School's senior leadership, offering guidance on student-related policy development and strategies for effective implementation. The Assistant Dean plays a central role in supporting students throughout their academic journey by providing individualized academic advising, developing and delivering programming responsive to student needs, and interpreting and applying academic standards and policies. The position oversees student welfare and discipline, ensures appropriate referrals to campus and external support resources, and promotes student success and well being. In addition, the Assistant Dean is responsible for overseeing the reasonable accommodations process for students with disabilities, serving as the primary point of contact for bar admissions and character and fitness matters, and supervising initiatives that advance diversity, inclusion, and the professional and ethical development of law students. As a senior leader within the Law School, the Assistant Dean provides leadership and coaching to subordinate managers and supervisors while fostering integration and collaboration across student service activities. Serve as a principal advisor to the Dean, Associate Deans, and senior leadership on academic and administrative issues pertaining to students, including policy development, student welfare, and risk management. Collaborate with faculty committees and senior administrators to develop, interpret, and implement academic policies and programs that enhance the student experience and support student success. Reviews, evaluates, and interprets School of Law policies related to student affairs and academic administration; recommends revisions and policy enhancements to ensure alignment with institutional goals, legal requirements, and best practices. Provide oversight and leadership for the course scheduling process. Through the Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs, ensure the schedule supports enrollment demands and curricular needs. As needed, participate in strategic meetings with the Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs, Director of Curricular Education, and Vice Dean for Curricular and Academic Affairs to review draft schedules and resolve conflicts. Provides strategic oversight and guidance for the placement of students into first-year courses and associated academic logistics related to curriculum articulation and program requirements, in coordination with the Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs, who retains operational responsibility for execution. Ensures alignment and consistency in the communication and application of academic standards, policies, and procedures across programs, in close partnership with the Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs, who is responsible for day-to-day management and implementation. Provide and oversee comprehensive academic counseling regarding course selection, curricular options, including appropriate course selections that enable students to satisfy subject requirements of state bar examinations, independent writing opportunities, graduation requirements, and bar eligibility considerations. Deliver presentations on these topics. (E) 2. Identify and counsel students experiencing academic difficulty about available options to improve their performance; collaborate with academic support and achievement programs to address student needs and make resources available to support academic success. (E) 3. Counsel students on personal, financial, health, caregiving, and other issues affecting student welfare; refer students to CAPS or other University resources as appropriate. Ensure students are aware of the University's emergency financial resources. (E) 4. Grant exam postponements, recommend leaves or withdrawals, approve deadline extensions on graded assignments, and interpret and apply academic standards in individual cases. (E) 5. Enforce academic standards and the UCLA Student Code of Conduct; conduct or oversee fact-finding and serve as a first-level decision authority in student discipline matters. Enforce student discipline and apply the School’s academic standards. (E) 6. Serve as principal intermediary between students and faculty in resolving academic, conduct, interpersonal, classroom, assignment, and grading concerns. Intervene, when necessary, to help resolve problems. (E) 7. Support Honor Code processes; assist students with character and fitness reporting to state bars.
