POSITION SUMMARY | The International Student Counselor is responsible for processing initial I-20 documents, reviewing technical aspects of visa and immigration documents for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with SEVIS reporting requirements, counseling on F-1 status, academic, personal, and social matters for the non-immigrant student population currently numbering 7250. Use individual and group interviews with non-immigrant students, and other instruments to assess and electronically report biographical, academic, and other information required by government agencies. Assist with institutional SEVIS reporting requirements in consultation with the student advising team. Conduct and develop check-in procedures, seminars, and online resources to ensure student compliance with SEVIS regulations, which include a review of regulations and benefits related to Optional Practical Training, Curricular Practical Training, Leave of Absence, etc. Develop workshops and special events to connect non-immigrant students with domestic students. Also, perform necessary SEVIS maintenance and document processing assignments under the supervision of the Associate Director for Student Visa Services. Key Responsibilities and Essential Functions | Function | Responsibilities | % Time | Visa & Immigration Counseling | Counsel J-1 students, scholars, and dependents on reporting requirements, J-1 visa compliance, and academic requirements. Handle complex cases independently such as change of status, 212e applicability, and status violations. | 20% | ARO Duties | Serve as an Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) for the UCLA Exchange Visitor program. Responsibilities include issuing/signing DS-2019 forms, and reviewing and processing request forms and applications related to J-1 visa services. | 20% | SEVIS Management | Independently determine SEVIS actions and maintain data collection systems for efficient document management. Upload/download batches, validate arrivals, and ensure institutional compliance with Department of Homeland Security and Department of State reporting requirements. | 10% | Campus Advisement | Advise academic departments and faculty on J-1 policies. Regularly inform the campus community of changes to government regulations and university procedures to ensure policies are being followed. | 10% | Policy Formulation & Compliance | Work with supervisor to implement university policy and procedures for J-1 visa services. Ensure all institutional processes conform to federal regulations, including the Code of Federal Regulations, the Immigration and Nationality Act, and Department of State policies | 10% | Personal and Professional Support | Guide J-1 visa holders on personal, financial, and professional matters, such as housing and health insurance.
