POSITION SUMMARY | The Student Services Advisor 2 works collaboratively with the Student Services Advisor 3 (SSA 3) to manage the undergraduate student and academic affairs programs for MCDB, with approximately 1000 undergraduate students, 75 teaching assistants, and 30 instructors annually. The incumbent advises students, teaching assistants, and instructors on instructional and related matters. Emphasis on incumbent advising undergraduate students in the MCDB program on departmental/degree requirements, as well as policies and procedures of the University that pertain to undergraduate students. Major duties include counseling of students, as well as accessing, communicating, and recording academic progress. The incumbent also works collaboratively with the SSA 3, the Chief Administrative Officer, the MCDB Chair, faculty and instructors, and other office staff on the hiring of Teaching Assistants and Readers for Molecular, Cell & Developmental Biology (MCDB). The incumbent exercises a high degree of independence, initiative and discretion in carrying out duties. | | | |

Key Responsibilities and Essential Functions | Function | Responsibilities | % Time | Academic Student Employee Management | • Manage the hiring of Teaching Assistants and Readers for MCDB courses. (E) • Manage advertising and recruitment of TA and Reader positions for the MCDB courses. (E) • Submit TA and Reader agreements to the MCDB Payroll Office for hiring of each quarter. (E) • Maintain and analyze past data of TAs for future hiring. (E) • Manage budget provided by the Dean of Life Science to hire Readers. (E) • Process fee remissions for all enrolled graduate students hired to TA for MCDB courses. (E) • Liaise with Molecular Biology Interdepartmental Program (MBIDP) with respect to TA hiring for MCDB. (E) | 30% | Undergraduate Advising, Counseling and Course Management | • Advise undergraduate students on the substance and course mechanics of the MCDB program by helping them interpret departmental/degree requirements and academic regulations and design the course of study that best suits their individual needs. Work with students to plan academic programs, including transfer of credits, to ensure timely completion of requirements. (E) • Advise students about MCDB courses and represent the department in orientation programs, especially, though not limited to, summer orientations. (E) • Advise students of policies and procedures of the University relating to undergraduate students and refer them to appropriate University services to resolve any issues. (E) • Evaluate and approve student requests, such as enrollment requests, course petitions, change of major petitions, et al according to College, MCDB, and Life Sciences policy. Develop protocols for approval of requests and petitions to promote consistency and efficiency in processing. (E) • Identify student issues and concerns, which may affect academic performance, and refer students to appropriate University services. Provide opportunities for students to discuss concerns confidentially. Counsel students in crisis and refer them to other faculty and campus offices for additional assistance when appropriate. (E) • Provide counseling to students planning for future careers and graduate and professional studies.
