POSITION SUMMARY

As the Assistant Director for Residential Education, the position will supervise of 3-6 full-time contract Resident Directors, oversee a residential area of 3,000-6,000 residents, manage residents' cases and conduct, serve on the active duty coverage for crises and emergencies, lead departmental committees, train and supervise peers, students, and staff, attend a variety of programs and events, including nights and weekends, and cultivate positive working relationships with colleagues and students across campus and in the surrounding community. This position is an initial 12-month contract that may be renewed up to three times.

Key Responsibilities and Essential Functions

ʉۢ Directly supervise 3-6 full-time Resident Directors (RDs) through regular one-on-one meetings, team meetings, and performance evaluations.

ʉۢ Provide mentorship and leadership to all staff in their area, including Assistant Resident Directors, Graduate Resident Directors, and Resident Assistants.

ʉۢ Lead departmental committees to develop best practices and innovative approaches to Residential Education.

ʉۢ Oversee and participate in the recruitment, selection, and training processes for professional and student staff.

ʉۢ Lead weekly court and unit meetings to foster collaboration, communication, and goal-setting amongst staff.

ʉۢ Conduct performance evaluations to support student staff development and accountability.

ʉۢ Support staff development through ongoing training, coaching, and professional learning opportunities.

Duty, Emergency Response, and Conduct Management

ʉۢ Serve as part of a 24/7/365 on-call rotation, providing timely consultation, response, and support for incidents and emergencies. Supports RDs on call via problem-solving and in-person response to critical incidents.

ʉۢ Collaborate with campus partners, such as CAPS, Case Management, and UCPD, to address student concerns and maintain a safe living environment.

ʉۢ Advise staff on managing and responding to high-level student conduct cases through a developmental lens, emphasizing education, accountability, and opportunities for personal reflection and growth.

ʉۢ Serve as a resource for staff in managing conflicts, policy enforcement, and emergencies.

ʉۢ Assist staff with crisis management, including incident de-escalation, documentation, and follow-up.

ʉۢ Conduct frequent audits of cases assigned to supervisees to ensure timely resolution of cases.

ʉۢ Organize and facilitate weekly meetings for their team to foster open communication, address issues, and plan upcoming events.

ʉۢ Attend weekly 1:1 meetings with their supervisor.

ʉۢ Utilize Residential Life and other relevant software for managing records, communication, and reporting tasks.

ʉۢ Oversee area budgets, monitor expenditures, and ensure fiscal responsibility.

ʉۢ Attend departmental meetings, training, and professional development sessions to enhance skills and stay informed about best practices in Residential Life.

ʉۢ Participate in mandatory position-specific training, and all University required training.

ʉۢ Utilize software systems, such as StarRez and Advocate, for effective resource and data management.

ʉۢ Work collaboratively with Housing in supporting their operations.

ʉۢ Assume other responsibilities as assigned by the Residential Life leadership team.
