POSITION SUMMARY | The Director of Student-Athlete Development supports and advances the mission of the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics by coordinating and implementing programs that enhance the personal growth, leadership development, life skills, and community engagement of student-athletes. Reporting directly to the Assistant Athletic Director of Student-Athlete Development, this position plays a pivotal role in executing strategic initiatives, managing signature programs, and building relationships with campus, community, and professional partners. The Director will oversee designated program areas, supervise assigned staff and student leaders, and ensure the delivery of high-quality, impactful programming. | | | |
Key Responsibilities and Essential Functions | Function | Responsibilities | % Time | Program Implementation & Coordination | • Manage assigned student-athlete development initiatives, including leadership workshops, life skills training, speaker series, and personal growth programming. • Serve as the primary lead for designated signature programs such as the Wooden Academy Speaker Symposium, Wooden Academy Champions Program, Wooden Academy Legacy Program, Financial Literacy, Networking Nights, or the Summer Work Opportunity Program (SWOP). • Coordinate logistics including scheduling, facility reservations, speaker engagement, participant communications, materials preparation, and post-event evaluations. • Track participation data and maintain program records for reporting and assessment. | 35% | Life Skills Programming | • Design and implement educational workshops that address areas such as time management, financial literacy, nutrition, mental health, substance use awareness, communication skills, and diversity/inclusion awareness. • Partner with campus departments, outside experts, and alumni to deliver high-impact sessions tailored to the student-athlete experience. • Develop resource materials and follow-up tools to help student-athletes apply skills in both academic and personal settings. • Partner with Bruin Varsity Club to connect student-athletes with former student-athletes for mentoring opportunities | 30% | Community Engagement & Outreach | • Coordinate student-athlete participation in community service and civic engagement activities. • Partner with local schools, nonprofits, and Athletics marketing staff to promote community initiatives. • Ensure compliance with NCAA promotional activity guidelines and maintain accurate service hour documentation. | 10% | Student Organization Advising | • Serve as an advisor and resource to student-athlete leadership groups such as the Bruin Athletic Council, Female Athletes Stand Together, and the other 8 affinity-based programs. • Assist with planning and implementing large-scale events, including the Welcome Back Picnic, Health & Wellness Week and Student-Athlete Awards Show. | 10% | Administrative Support & Collaboration | • Assist with budget tracking and purchasing for assigned program areas. • Contribute to departmental reports, surveys, and program assessments. • Represent Student-Athlete Development on Big Ten, departmental or campus committees as assigned. | 10% | Department Rules Compliance Expectations | • Comply with all Federal, State, University and Department requirements established pursuant to Title IX, including the mandatory reporting requirements for a “Responsible Employee.” • The DIA is governed by the NCAA, Big Ten Conference and University of California.
