POSITION SUMMARY

The Associate Director assists in all elements of service delivery and program development for students registered with the CAE with various disabilities. Provides information to UCLA students who suspect that they may have a disability and make referrals to on-campus and off-campus resources; provides specialized disability-related counseling for students; coordinate and explain services for students served by CAE; leads and/or co-facilitates support groups and instruct small group workshops in disability management and advocacy; provides disability awareness presentations for campus faculty, staff and students. Prepares written program materials, and assists, when necessary, in other CAE services and functions.

 

Reporting to the CAE Director, the Associate Director oversees CAE Disability Specialist (DS) team and manages the documentation review and intake process.

Major duties include: supervises CAE Disability Specialists; manages documentation review process; provides leadership to the DS team; identifies strategies, establishes staffing levels and caseloads; establishes communication mechanisms that are responsive to the students and to the faculty; engages in outreach and education for the faculty to achieve desired outcomes and establishes needed linkages with other campus and community organizations such as Counseling and Psychological Services, Athletics, Career Center, Academic Advisors, and Associate Deans in the professional schools. Provides guidance and support to Disability Specialists. Caseload will include high-resource students needing high-level support. As a member of the CAE Leadership Team, helps manage resources (space, budget, personnel); develops program materials; and otherwise assists as needed in the CAE.

PROGRAM LEADERSHIP, ADMINISTRATION AND DEVELOPMENT 

Provide strategic vision and leadership for the planning, development, implementation, evaluation, and management of the services and activities in the Center for Accessible Education. Exercise initiative and judgment in development, interpretation, and application of policies and procedures for provision of services in compliance with federal/state regulations and university policies. Supervises 10 Disabilities Specialists and 1 graduate intern, to include training, case assignment and consultation, and annual performance appraisal to evaluate quality of work. Oversee CAE's intake process, including student request for services, documentation management, and scheduling of student appointments. Liaises between the various units within the CAE to ensure operational effectiveness.

STUDENT OFFICE SUPPORT AND TRAINING 

Provide specialized disability-related counseling for students with disabilities, including: disability management, compensatory strategies, assistive technology, academic issues, and advocacy skills. Make appropriate referrals to on-campus and off-campus resources for students with disabilities, including: Financial Aid, Athletics, Career Center, Ashe Center, Counseling and Psychological Services, Disabilities and Computing Program, academic counseling. Keep abreast of changes in disability law or practice as it relates to the assessment of students with disabilities. Assist with and facilitate in-service training, disability awareness and suggestions for teaching strategies for faculty and campus partners.

ASSESSMENT AND DETERMINATION OF SERVICES AND ACCOMMODATIONS 

Assist in all elements of service delivery and program development for students served by CAE in general, by assessing medical documentation and interpreting psychoeducational evaluations to verify disability according to University, State, and Federal guidelines in order to determine appropriate accommodations and support. Provide information to UCLA students who request disability-based accommodations/services. Conduct intake appointments with individual students, evaluate medical documentation to determine eligibility for services based on legal parameters, and UC/UCLA, and CAE policies. Consult with other professional staff as necessary. Write confidential case notes for student files after intake or counseling meetings. Determine appropriate accommodations and authorize services.

CAMPUS AND COMMUNITY RELATIONS 

Liaison with on-campus/off-campus departments and programs to coordinate services and address needs of students with disabilities. Assist in coordinating activities with the Housing Accommodations Appeals Board. Work with faculty, department Chairs, teaching assistants and other academic personnel to coordinate appropriate academic accommodations for students with disabilities. Provide consultation to other UC campuses. Assist with and facilitate in-service training, disability awareness and suggestions for teaching strategies for faculty and campus partners. Work with statewide and national network of professionals to stay informed of current issues and definitions of disabilities. Serve on campus committees as appropriate.

ADMINISTRATIVE RESPONSIBILTIES 

Monitor individual staff performance and conduct annual evaluations. Participate in the management of organizational resources, including budget, space and personnel. Responsible for summary reports on quarterly and yearly work of Disability Specialists. Maintain organization and quality control over documentation review and intake process. Participate as a member of the CAE Leadership Team and serve as a part of the CAE Advisory Board. In the absence of the CAE Director, the Associate Director provides oversight to the CAE Department and related tasks.
