POSITION SUMMARY

The Academic Advisor advises undergraduate students served by Center for Academic Advising in the College (CAAC) at UCLA regarding academic requirements and options. CAAC is part of the Division of Undergraduate Education within the UCLA College and provides academic advising and related programs and services to approximately 21,000 undergraduates. Major responsibilities of the Academic Advisor in addition to academic advising include: participate in the development, administration and evaluation of all programs under the jurisdiction of CAAC and College Academic Counseling; participate in outreach activities, and evaluate student petitions and determine decisions. This position requires maintaining a regular schedule and on-time attendance. This position reports to the CAAC Director of Advising Staff and Administration.

A1. Advise CAC students (excepting AAP, Honors, Student-Athletes) regarding academic options and alternatives and explain, interpret and advise on University, College and major requirements in scheduled appointments, at the window, and as needed. Advise CAC and AAP students (as needed) in REACH virtual drop-in sessions.

 

A2. Respond to inquiries from students and parents regarding complex academic and related issues.

 

A3. Compose letters of recommendation as requested in support of student applications for graduate and professional schools, employment, scholarships, etc.

 

A4. Conduct workshops for specific groups of students.

 

A5. Follow-up on individual student cases and make referrals when appropriate.

B1. Process student petitions and make decisions, both independent and in consultation with other staff, on behalf of the College. Act on requests for exceptions to rules and policies using established and uniform guidelines.

 

B2. Analyze the records of students who are on Academic Notice and Academic Continuation and determine appropriate action.

 

 

B3. Evaluate student applications for readmission to UCLA and determine appropriate action.

Program Development and Administration

C1. Develop and administer special advising projects, assignments and events for undergraduate students, including participation in office committees, student workshops and maintenance of programs.

 

C2. Participate as requested with the Director of Advising Staff and Administration in selection and orientation of new CAAC advisors and staff.

 

C3. Participate in future development and long-range planning for the Center for Academic Advising in the College (e.g., new programs for students, recommendations for improvement of service).

 

C4. Maintain coordination and communication with other offices required for completion of assigned responsibilities.

Outreach

D1. Represent College Academic Counseling on committees and at meetings with other student service offices.

 

D2. Speak at events offered by other campus offices representing CAAC.

 

D3. Outreach to continuing students via printed and on-line publications, mailings, workshops, etc.

 

D4. Outreach to special groups of students such as students in academic difficulty and students who are required to choose a major, etc.

 

D5. Outreach and collaborate with other offices, departments and organizations (i.e., Academic Senate, Undergraduate Admissions, Alumni Association, New Student and Transition Programs, Career Center, Dean of Students Office, Registrar's, Housing, Women's Resource Center).

E1. Participate in on-going evaluation of programs in the Center for Academic Advising in the College, including recommendations for policy and procedural changes and implementation.
