POSITION SUMMARY

Under the supervision of the Pharmacy Manager, the Lead Pharmacist provides patient care, performs clinical and administrative tasks, oversees dispensing prescriptions, and provides patient consultations within the scope of a California licensed pharmacist to manage medication therapy and ensure optimal patient health and wellbeing.  The Lead Pharmacist also aids the Pharmacy Manager in leading pharmacy operations and workflow, while also complying with state and federal laws, rules, regulations, and organizational policies and procedures. This position also collaborates with various health care providers to ensure appropriate pharmacological guidance while resolving prescription ambiguities and issues. This role also serves as a lead figure for all staff pharmacists and pharmacy technicians, providing guidance and support to the Bruin Pharmacy team. The Lead Pharmacist also maintains security of pharmacy, appropriate storage, handling, ordering, and preparation of drugs within a safe and clean work environment.

Our comprehensive services include Primary Care, Gynecology Services, Immunizations, Travel Medicine, Physical Therapy, Specialty Clinics, Radiology & Laboratory, and Acupuncture – all under one roof! We are also pleased to offer additional services in the Ackerman Student Union: a full-service optometry center, U See LA Optometry, and the Bruin Health Pharmacy.

Drug Distribution

Reviews, interprets and dispenses medications by licensed prescriber orders as required by state and federal agencies. Reviews patient medication profiles to ensure appropriate medication therapy, appropriate dosage, screen for all drug, allergy and disease interactions, contraindications, adverse interactions and review of therapeutic duplication. Maintains accurate patient medication profiles. Dispenses medications by compounding, packaging, and labeling pharmaceuticals. Monitors drug therapies and advising interventions. Reviews compliance, medication workflows, utilization pattern and response to therapy using standard outcome criteria.

Pharmacy Staff Support

Acts as pharmacist “leader” in facilitating pharmacy operations and coordinating staff functioning and workflow. Contributes to the efficient running of the pharmacy by timely, accurate and responsive performance of duties. Communicates and receives staff concerns and participates in conflict resolution in collaboration with CHR ELR when needed. Assists with scheduling of pharmacy staff to ensure smooth operations. Assists with resolving prescription-related concerns and provides guidance to the pharmacy staff when needed. Partner with Pharmacy Manager on new staff onboarding, training, and orientation.

Pharmacy Manager Support

Participates in conducting, establishing and monitoring quality assurance and patient safety standards.  Assists Pharmacy Manager with overseeing performance of pharmaceutical work of all pharmacy staff members within the pharmacy. Collaborates with Pharmacy Manager to identify pain points and further enhance growth opportunities.  Understands the financial aspect of retail pharmacy and assists with business strategies and financial analysis to help achieve positive outcomes and cost savings opportunities.

Clinical Services

Communicates with Health Care prescribers to resolve prescription problems. Provides pharmacological information to patients and clinical staff. Counsels patients on proper use, possible interactions and all aspects of medications / over-the-counter products. Prescribes and administers selected medications under protocol as permitted by scope of practice and regulation.  Coordinates the pharmacy emergency contraceptive prescribing program.

Pharmacy Operations

Complies with State and Federal drug laws, rules and regulations. Removes outdated drugs from the pharmacy inventory, reviewing pharmacy and clinic recall medications. Acknowledges current licensure dates. Maintains pharmacy security during business hours. Reviews and advises on existing, new and developing pharmacy legislation. Oversees pharmacy operations in the absence of the Pharmacist in Charge

Administrative Functions and Information/Research Services

Appropriately identifies and resolves all pharmacy related problems. Ensures that most efficacious, safe and cost-effective medications are used. Identifies and provides input to improve pharmacy policies/procedures. Acts as pharmacy liaison to clinical staff. Stays up to date with current clinical guidelines and drugs.  Maintains accurate pharmacy management systems. Participates in organizational committees. Protects patients and pharmacy technicians by adhering to infection-control and Hazardous Drug protocols. Maintains a safe and clean working environment.

Record Keeping

Maintains non-controlled and controlled substance (CS) inventory and assists with quarterly inventory reconciliation and biennial CS inventory. Identifies and reports CS discrepancies to the Pharmacy Manager and files incident reports as needed. Maintains records for CS and prescription records per DSCSA. Maintains pharmacy records accurately and for an appropriate time period. Performs Quality Assurance audits and documents medication errors in databases and to the Pharmacy Manager. Adjusts par levels and updates pricing.
