POSITION SUMMARY

 

CRDJ is known for critical investigation of the social impact of digital technologies on communities and the broader public good. It aims to create new paradigms for the public to understand the harms of tech platforms, predictive technologies, advertising-driven algorithmic content, and the work of digital laborers.

 

The successful candidate will have a background in and be passionate about using data to highlight the intersection of gender, sexuality, labor and technology. They will be a highly skilled researcher with experience in using mixed methodologies to study innovative and understudied topics. They will also be able to produce manuscripts and visual displays that clearly communicate research results.

 

The successful candidate will be able to learn the details of complex topics and help identify opportunities where high quality research could drive positive change in technology and it's impacts on the public. They will be able to understand new and existing external research and how insights from that research can be applied to our research projects in CRDJ.

 

This position requires an individual who is able to work both independently and as a part of small research teams to drive projects to completion. We seek a highly organized individual with excellent project and time management skills in order to balance running multiple projects concurrently, including fast-turnaround data analysis. This position will work with researchers at CRDJ, staff from external agencies, as well as the leadership team at CRDJ, and will need excellent written and verbal communication skills to interact with these different audiences. 

 

The Research Data Analyst will report to CRDJ's director and will work collaboratively with CRDJ staff, and our partner agencies.

Department Summary

The Department of Gender Studies is housed in the Division of Social Sciences at UCLA. The Center on Resilience and Data Justice is a research center that focuses on deep and lasting public impact that foregrounds accountability and repair from extant and emerging digital and AI harms.


Key Responsibilities and Essential Functions

Data Analysis

- Work with CRDJ collaborators to gather requirements for analyses for research studies by the center.

- Develop systems for organizing data to analyze, identify and report trends.

- Gather, analyze, prepare and summarizes the collection of information and data; recommends statistical and other methodological approaches, trends, sources and uses.

- Perform exploratory analysis on new datasets and identify potential research questions or projects the data could support.

-Create or add to existing data documentation that supports CRDJ’s research projects.

Research Planning and Implementation

- Work with CRDJ’s director to identify high-priority research questions.

- Write and implement detailed analysis plans that answer these high-priority questions.

- Fit and test a variety of methodological models and research designs that draw historical and current day policy-relevant insights.

- Keeps abreast of technical advances in storage, documentation and dissemination of computerized data and related technology.

Prepare Manuscripts for Publication

- Lead publication of manuscripts, papers and policy reports to publishers, external funding agencies and collaborative partners. Tasks may include:

 

1) facilitation of communication between coauthors, 2) communicate with publishers, 3) submit and track submissions of manuscripts or proposals, 4) appropriately acknowledge funding sources and contributors, 5) prepare citations.

Presentation of Results

- Provide in-person progress reports to CRDJ Director, research team members, other scholars in the field and policymakers.

- Summarize the results of analyses with data visualizations, presentations, and written reports that are accessible for technical and non-technical audiences.

- Prepares and presents findings at conferences and other convenings.

Manage IRB Protocols

- Manage all consolidated institutional review board protocols in IRB systems, including: 1) monitoring compliance with IRB certification for projects, 2) submit proposals for review, 3) apply for modifications to previously approved IRBs, 4) obtain IRB continuing reviews or PI assurances annually, 5) submit post-approval reports of unanticipated problems, and 6) submit closure reports.
