POSITION SUMMARY

Under the general supervision of the Faculty Director and senior research staff, the Research Assistant will engage in community-engaged geochemical and environmental justice-related research, education, outreach, and communications. The incumbent will contribute to GIS and STEM data analysis for literature reviews and reports, provide administrative support to related research and program activities, work with community partners, and mentor and train others on entry-level tasks. The incumbent will assist in presenting research and preparing communication materials, and will serve as a research assistant supporting active projects spanning geochemistry, atmospheric chemistry, environmental justice, and community health. There is no clinical work associated with this position.

The Institute of the Environment and Sustainability (IoES) moves science to action on the front lines of environmental progress. Using Los Angeles and California as a testbed, IoES develops solutions for the broader world, and our commitment to effective communication ensures that those ideas are heard. With our research centers and field stations, plus extensive partnerships across UCLA, IoES has local, national, and global reach. We work closely with campus leaders including the Emmett Institute on Climate Change, the Luskin Center for Public Policy, and the Anderson School of Management. These collaborations bring together diverse talent to focus on today's most urgent environmental problems.

Research Support & Data Analysis

ʉۢ Under supervision, contributes to geochemical and environmental justice-related research projects, including community-engaged research on community environmental health, oil and gas health protection zones, and climate and community health.

ʉۢ Assists with GIS and STEM data analysis for literature reviews, technical reports, and policy briefs.

ʉۢ Conducts literature reviews and synthesizes scientific findings to support manuscripts, reports, and communications materials.

ʉۢ Supports data collection, entry, cleaning, and organization, including community-engaged data collection and partner-contributed data.

ʉۢ Assists with atmospheric chemistry, geochemical, and environmental data analysis under the direction of senior researchers.

ʉۢ Maintains accurate records of research activities and data

Education, Outreach & Community Partnerships

 â€¢ Supports outreach and education activities relating to geochemistry, environmental justice, climate, and community health, including activities with K–12 students, college students, youth organizers, and community-based partners.

ʉۢ Assists in coordinating community-engaged research activities and meetings with community partners, including Esperanza Community Housing, the South Central Youth Leadership Coalition, Gabrielino-Tongva Tribal Council, and other partners.

ʉۢ Mentors and trains entry-level student researchers, volunteers, and community researchers on routine tasks and protocols.

ʉۢ Represents the research team at community meetings and outreach events under guidance from senior staff.

ʉۢ Assists in preparing research communications materials, including fact sheets, infographics, data visualizations, and digital content for community and non-scientific audiences.

ʉۢ Contributes to drafting sections of manuscripts, technical reports, and conference presentations as a co-author or contributor.

ʉۢ Supports preparation of grant proposal sections, progress reports, and funder communications under direction of the Faculty Director.

ʉۢ Provides support to research and program activities, including scheduling, logistics, meeting coordination, and partner communications.
