POSITION SUMMARY

The School of Dentistry Faculty Group Dental Practice (FGDP) is a dental practice with more than 25 general dentists and specialists. The Registered Dental Assistant (RDA) will perform chairside assistant in various areas such as but not limited to General Dentistry, Endodontics, Oral Surgery, Fixed and Removable Prosthodontics, Periodontics, Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics The incumbent will assist in patient care chairside; Perform complex and technical procedures such as mount-mirror inspections of the oral cavity and charting obvious lesions, existing restorations, periodontal pocket measurements, and missing teeth; Perform other clinical support activities; Maintain and stock, sterilize instruments and prepare / tear down chairs, Perform specific administrative functions; help develop, implement,  follow standard operating procedures to ensure excellent patient experiences and clinic efficiencies; proactively plan for the needs of and set up for clinical procedures; and other duties as assigned.

 

Incumbent is expected to perform responsibilities independently and to prioritize and organize work to ensure that all assigned duties are completed in a timely manner. The RDA is expected to assist other staff members, covering when colleagues are absent, learning and expanding their industry knowledge and generally willing to expand duties and assist with other projects as the need may arise. The RDA may also be accountable to peers placed in leadership positions within their divisional focus and responsibilities. Delegated projects and performance reviews management with input from various stakeholders will be undertaken and reviewed by practice manager periodically and at the minimum once per year. Performance evaluation will be undertaken on an annual basis with input regarding clinical techniques and work performance solicited from faculty and contract dental practitioners.

Chairside

1. Set up and maintain assigned operatories with the appropriate armamentarium / instrumentation / supplies for all chairside procedures.

2. Assist in all chairside procedures as allowed under RDA licensing under California state law including but not limited to:

a) take impressions and digital scans for diagnostic and opposing models, occlusal and sports guards and orthodontic appliances etc.;

b) sizing and fabricating temporary crown and bridge;

c) removing excess cement from supragingival surfaces of teeth with a hand instrument or floss;

d) coronal polishing (RDA must first complete a Board approved course);

e) placing and removing rubber dams;

f) removing ortho bands, placing and removing elastic separators;

g) chemically prepare teeth for bonding and assist orthodontist in appliance placement, bonding and banding;

h) remove and place archwires;

i) remove orthodontics bands;

j) bonding and part of pit and fissure sealant application;

k) apply F varnish/giving CAMBRA instruction as instructed by the dentists;

l) complex and technical procedures such as mount-mirror inspections of the oral cavity to chart obvious lesions, existing restorations and missing teeth; and

m) take intraoral scans and photographs.

3. Aid and assist faculty practitioners in setting up and treating infectious disease patients.

4. Make certain proper appointments are made for future treatment.

5. Advise faculty practitioners of any balances that may be

showing on patient's account that would be noted on the daily schedules

6. Take x-rays on patients as instructed by the dentist.

7. In collaboration with practitioner and other staff, proactively plan and implement clinic sessions to ensure smooth operations and good patient care.

8. Follow clinic procedures during patient medical emergencies including phone calls to emergency response areas, and providing oxygen tanks and other emergency equipment as indicated.

9. Ability to cross train as needed to perform chairside assisting to multiple treatment specialties as needed by the practice.

Administrative

1. Check content of dental patient record. Place authorized material in records.

2. Review patient record and ensure patient procedure notes have been entered by the practitioner after completion of each treatment. Enter procedures and treatment charges into computer system.

3. Enter patient treatment plan into system and obtain approval from Practice Manager and/or Insurance Manager before presenting treatment to patient.

4. Make out charge slips.

5. Escort patient to Practice Cashier to make appointments, and payments.

6. Answer patient questions concerning procedures.

7. Give all charts to Practice Cashier at the end of the patient visit.

8. Write up any adjustments forms for any reductions approved  by the practicing doctor or manager.

9. Inform patients of cash collection policy and payment due of visit.

10. Clean and flush the evacuation system.

11. Perform patient appointments as needed.

12. Participate in requested surveys, peer reviews, and teambuilding opportunities as presented by the Practice Manager or other practice leadership.

1. Work in compliance with infection control policies in the practice related to disinfection of operatories, instrument sterilization procedures, and dispensing of sterile instruments and supplies.

2. Clean operatories after treatment.

3. Properly dispose of contaminated supplies.

4. Clean instruments and all work surfaces.

5. Disinfect operating equipment.

6. Turn off equipment after use.

7. Maintain operatories by ensuring they are kept neat and orderly in physical appearance.

8. Procure and return equipment, instruments and supplies.

9. Maintain proper levels of supplies and medicaments. Place orders with manager when stock levels are low.

10. Ensure that FGDP equipment is functional and in good working condition. Advice Practice Manager of needed repair or replacement.

Other Duties

1. Pick up lab cases.

2. Pick up impression trays from the lab and clean them.

3. Clean and stock operatories.

4. Serve as back-up to colleagues and other staff.

5. Embrace learning opportunities and expansion of knowledge supporting the core performance of the practice, including practice software and digital technologies.

6. Serve as front office back-up.

7. Help develop, implement, follow standard operating procedures to ensure excellent patient and clinic experience.
