SUPERVISION - Indicates that the incumbent performs a variety of routine duties within established policies and procedures or by referral to the supervisor’s guidelines.


POSITION SUMMARY

Under the direction of the shift supervisor, staff a 24 hour, 7 day communications center on a rotating shift. Process and record emergency and routine complaints. Dispatch and receive radio calls regarding crimes, patrol, citizen assists, basic information, etc. Operate, update, and maintain computer terminal used for requesting and receiving information from the National Law Enforcement Telecommunications System based on officer requests. Provide assistance to public as requested over telephone and public counter. Operate, update, and maintain Computer Assisted Dispatch System. Monitor and direct appropriate response to Police and Fire alarm systems.

Telephone Contact

Coordinate and prioritize multiple telephone calls on 10-line console, so that emergency calls, report calls, and information calls are properly dispatched. Repeat information received accurately and concisely, with proper information taken.

Radio Dispatching

Broadcast and receive police calls for suspected crimes in progress, crime reports, community member assists or reports, basic information, patrol check-in, coordination, etc. Coordinate multiple radio calls received simultaneously; ensure emergency calls receive proper priority response.

Alarm Response

Coordinate and document alarms according to written procedures; to include robbery, burglary, and fire alarm systems. Coordinate police and/or non-sworn response to all types of alarms, with appropriate notifications made.

Public Assistance

Provide assistance to public (including staff, students, and all community members) as requested over the telephone and at the public counter.

Teletype Operation

Operate, update, and maintain a computer terminal for requesting and receiving information from the National Law Enforcement Telecommunications System, based on officer requests.

Assigned Duties

Perform clerical and maintenance duties for continuity of Communications Center as assigned by the supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum qualifications for Public Safety Dispatcher include satisfactory completion of a POST-certified, 120-hour Basic Public Safety Dispatcher course within 12 months of the date of hire; undergo a thorough background investigation; an evaluation of oral communication skills; the completion of 12 months' probation; and the completion of a medical examination.

Reporting and Background Check Requirements

Background Check: Continued employment is contingent upon the completion of a satisfactory background investigation.

Live Scan Background Check: A Live Scan background check must be completed prior to the start of employment.

Age Requirement: Candidate(s) must be 18 years or older to be eligible to be hired.

Pre-Placement Physical: Employment is contingent upon the completion of a satisfactory physical examination.

Driving Record: The position is subject to the California DMV "Pull Notice System" and continued employment is contingent upon proof of a satisfactory driving record.

Reading Comprehension Test: A reading assessment will be conducted.

CANRA: The position is designated as a mandatory reporter under CANRA. The employee must sign the "Statement Acknowledging Requirement to Report Child Abuse".
