POSITION SUMMARY

The Deputy Director works with the Executive Director, Academic Coordinator, Faculty in Residence, and Senior Advisor(s) to develop and oversee critical areas of the UCLA Prison Education Program (PEP) and Center for Justice (CFJ), including program management and operations; policy research; advocacy; communications; development; expansion; supervision of staff; and oversight and support for fellows, interns, graduate researchers, and teaching assistants.

The Deputy Director serves as the liaison for PEP/CFJ campus initiatives and collaborations with UCLA campus divisions, departments, schools, and other college and university partners, as well as funders and foundations. The Deputy Director will serve as a lead facilitator in the development and implementation of a collaborative 2–3 year plan to establish the Bachelor's Degree in Prison (BDP) initiative through a new interdepartmental degree in Justice Studies.

Report to and participate in weekly meetings with the Executive Director/PEP Director to align40 on priorities, deliverables, and program operations. (E)

Serve as a senior leader supporting the Executive Director and core leadership team in strategic planning, operational oversight, and program execution across PEP/CFJ initiatives. (E)

Facilitate development and implementation of a multi-year (2–3 year) roadmap to establish the BDP / Justice Studies initiative, aligning stakeholders and deliverables across faculty and campus governance structures. (E)

Develop new programs and opportunities that advance PEP’s mission and vision and contribute to long-term sustainability (e.g., certificate programs in collaboration with UNEX). (E)

Community Engagement and Partnership

Lead and coordinate cross-campus partnerships to advance program goals, including collaborative work with UCLA departments, schools, and administrative units. (E)

Manage collaboration and communication with UCLA departments and campus entities, including the Academic Senate, UNEX, SSGS, and other departments as necessary. (E)

Coordinate activities with the Faculty Planning Committee and Faculty Advisory Board to support creation of an accredited degree program eligible for Pell funding. (E)

Report to and participate in quarterly meetings with the PEP Faculty Advisory Board (FAB), including preparation of updates, materials, and status reporting on key initiatives and deliverables. (E)

Cultivate and sustain external partnerships central to program delivery and expansion, including relations

Development and Grant Management

Oversee program management, fiscal oversight, and grant reporting for grants in which the Deputy Director serves as principal investigator. (E)

Identify, pursue, and support funding opportunities; oversee grant budgets, compliance, reporting, and related administrative processes as applicable. (E)

Identify and secure funding to sustain the development and implementation of a Bachelor’s Degree in Prison initiative. (E)

Assist with community convenings and special events as needed. (E)

Support high-quality programming and events, including community convenings and special initiatives, in collaboration with internal leadership and partners. (E)

Supervision and Talent Development

In the PEP Director’s absence, all staff will report weekly to the Deputy Director or to the designee appointed by the CFJ Faculty Director. (E)

Supervise staff and provide guidance, mentorship, and oversight for fellows, interns, graduate researchers, and teaching assistants; cultivate effective team operations and accountability systems. (E)

Support and collaborate with the Academic Coordinator, Executive Director, student staff, and interns to deliver high-quality programming and events. (E)
